Thundercat’s extremely Sonic-filled visit to SEGA has received a much closer look.

Sonic Channel has published a new behind-the-scenes report and video documenting the world-famous bassist’s visit to SEGA’s headquarters in Japan, revealing several details that were not apparent when photos from the meeting first surfaced earlier this year. And if there were any lingering questions about exactly how deep Thundercat’s Sonic fandom goes, arriving dressed as Shadow with a custom Super Sonic bass should probably settle them.

Sonic City previously covered the visit back in May, when Thundercat was photographed with Sonic, Shadow, Sonic Creative Director Kazuyuki Hoshino and Sonic series Sound Director Tomoya Ohtani ahead of his Japanese tour. The new Sonic Channel feature gives us a much fuller account of that day, beginning with Thundercat arriving at SEGA in custom Sonic gear. His outfit included Shadow-inspired headwear, a Super Sonic jacket and necklace, and an outer garment featuring a large Shadow design, with Sonic Channel noting that some of the pieces had been specially custom ordered.

Once inside, Thundercat was greeted by Sonic and Shadow themselves for a suitably chaotic group photo before sitting down with Kazuyuki Hoshino. The two discussed Sonic’s history and the appeal of its characters, with Shadow naturally receiving plenty of attention. Hoshino also presented Thundercat with a hand-drawn Shadow illustration, prompting an enthusiastic “Amazing!” from the musician.

The visit then moved to SEGA’s sound studio for a meeting with Tomoya Ohtani, where things became even more interesting. Thundercat brought out a glittering gold bass decorated with Super Sonic artwork, which Sonic Channel says had been prepared specifically for his Japanese live tour. Ohtani, who also occasionally performs bass during live shows, was able to borrow the instrument and play it himself while the pair talked music and bass playing.

That custom instrument may be the best illustration yet of just how serious Thundercat is about Sonic. His appreciation for the series has never exactly been hidden, particularly when it comes to Shadow, but commissioning Sonic-themed clothing and a Super Sonic bass for an actual tour takes things several levels beyond casually mentioning your favorite game in an interview.

Sonic Channel describes the visit as strengthening the connection between Thundercat and the Sonic Team, although it stops short of announcing any kind of musical collaboration or future project. So no, we are not declaring Thundercat the bassist on the next Sonic soundtrack just yet. What we do have is a considerably more detailed look at one of the more unexpected celebrity visits to SEGA this year, complete with a newly released video documenting the day.
