IDW Sonic the Hedgehog #89 and Sonic x Godzilla #2 Are Out Now

IDW has two new Sonic comics out at the same time this week, with Sonic the Hedgehog #89 and Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #2 both releasing on September 9 for $4.99 each.

For Sonic x Godzilla #2, the release comes a week later than planned. As we previously reported, the issue was pushed from September 2 to September 9 after a truck transporting several IDW releases was involved in an accident. Nobody was injured.

Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #2

Written by Nick Marino, with artwork by Jack Lawrence and colors by Reggie Graham, the second chapter picks up after Mothra and Mechagodzilla’s attack on Station Square. Sonic, Amy and Tails are now heading straight toward Angel Island, bringing Knuckles into the growing kaiju problem, while Dr. Eggman investigates the crashed Mechagodzilla for himself. Shadow also enters the crossover beginning with this issue.

The regular issue has three IDW covers. Jack Lawrence provides Cover A, Kevin Anthony Catalan handles Cover B and Natalie Haines draws the retailer incentive cover. Comics to Astonish also has an exclusive fourth cover by Matt Herms.

The latest chapter continues the five-issue crossover between Sonic and Toho’s monsters, with Mechagodzilla’s arrival giving Eggman a particularly dangerous piece of unfamiliar technology to investigate while the rest of the cast deals with the consequences.

Sonic the Hedgehog #89

The ongoing IDW series also begins its next major story with Sonic the Hedgehog #89, written by Evan Stanley with artwork by Min Ho Kim.

The issue shifts the spotlight to Silver and Blaze, who find themselves guests of a new character named Blackwood the Ermine. His grand castle initially offers the pair a polite welcome, but Silver soon notices something decidedly strange about Blackwood’s cheerful staff. Everyone appears to be behaving with an unsettling level of coordination.

Blaze is considerably more comfortable dealing with the castle’s high-society politics, leaving Silver to poke around the stranger corners of the estate as the pair investigate how Blackwood and his household connect to the ongoing mystery surrounding the missing Chaos Emeralds. IDW describes the issue as the beginning of the next arc on the road to issue #100.

The story continues through issues #90 and #91, forming the Silver and Blaze portion of IDW’s current Road to #100 storyline before the focus moves to Tangle and Whisper in issues #92 and #93. We previously looked ahead at that wider storyline, while the newly announced Smoke & Mirrors trade paperback will eventually collect issues #89 through #93 together.
