Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Sonikku za Hejjihoggu) is a Japanese video game franchise created and owned by SEGA starring its mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog.

The series debuted in 1991 with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console. This game played a crucial role in establishing SEGA as a leading video game company during the 16-bit era. In North America and Europe, Sonic the Hedgehog replaced Altered Beast as the default pack-in game for the Genesis, allowing SEGA to directly compete with Nintendo‘s Super Mario series for a period.
