Sonic Blitz is coming to an abrupt end.

The developers behind the Sonic digital card game have announced that development of Sonic Blitz has officially been discontinued, confirming that the project will not progress beyond its current soft-launch phase. The decision comes as part of what the team describes as broader changes within the studio, although no further details about those changes have been provided.

That also means Sonic Blitz itself is shutting down remarkably soon. The game will be removed from both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store and will no longer be accessible after August 24, 2026. Its official Discord server and X account are scheduled to close on the same day, effectively bringing both the game and its surrounding official community channels to an end.

In a message shared with players, the development team stressed that the cancellation was not a reflection of the work put into the game or the response it received from its community:

“We want to be clear that this decision is not a reflection of the passion, creativity, or effort that went into making Sonic Blitz, nor of the amazing support we received from our community throughout the development of the game.”

The team added that it was proud of what had been created and thanked everyone who played, submitted feedback and participated in the community throughout development.

Sonic Blitz was being developed as a competitive collectible card game built around the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Rather than receiving a full global launch, however, the project remained in soft launch, with the developers continuing to test and expand the game alongside player feedback. Today’s announcement confirms that those plans have now been abandoned entirely.

The wording is particularly definitive. This is not simply the end of new updates or a temporary suspension of development. The developers say the game will not move forward beyond soft launch, and with access itself ending on August 24, Sonic Blitz will effectively disappear just days after the announcement.

Players who have been following the project since its earliest versions received a final thank-you from the team:

“Whether you joined us recently or have been here since v1.0 of the CCG, your support meant a great deal to the team. Thank you for playing Sonic Blitz!”

It is a surprisingly sudden conclusion for a Sonic project that was still actively being developed and tested, and leaves Sonic Blitz as one of the relatively rare officially licensed Sonic games to end its life before ever reaching a full release.
