Madeon has finally made music for Sonic the Hedgehog, ten years after SEGA first teased a connection between the French producer and the series.
The producer has created a new Green Hill Zone remix to celebrate the ongoing Sonic x Fortnite collaboration, sharing a clip of himself playing the track live on Instagram.
Madeon summed up the collaboration pretty simply:
“Made music for my favorite video game of all time to celebrate Sonic x Fortnite!”
That makes this more than just another commissioned remix. Sonic is apparently Madeon’s favorite game of all time.
The collaboration also closes a loop that has been open since 2016.
Back in February of that year, the official Sonic account posted a strange Green Hill-themed image built around the visual style and hidden-message language of Madeon’s debut album, Adventure, telling fans:
“The key lies with @madeon. Good luck.”
The post immediately sparked speculation that SEGA and Madeon were working on something together.
A few months later, the connection became much less cryptic. Sonic’s official account publicly asked Madeon how many Gold Rings it would take to use one of his songs in a new Sonic game trailer, with SEGA later saying it would send in the licensing request.
Nothing resembling a full Sonic soundtrack collaboration followed at the time, but a decade later Madeon has finally put his own spin on one of the series’ most recognizable pieces of music.
The original Green Hill Zone theme was composed by Masato Nakamura for the first Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991. Madeon’s version reworks that melody into his own electronic style for Sonic’s current Fortnite crossover.
The remix arrives during Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, which has made Sonic one of the season’s major gaming collaborations. As Sonic City covered at launch, players can race through a Green Hill Zone area using Sonic’s Power Sneakers. Epic’s official season overview confirms the Green Hill race as one of Override’s headline crossover features.
There is one detail worth keeping straight: the Green Hill Zone: Act 2 – Normal Jam Track currently appearing in Fortnite is a separate track credited to SEGA SOUND TEAM and Jun Senoue. Madeon’s newly shared Green Hill remix is not that Jam Track.
Ten years after Sonic’s social team told fans that “the key” lay with Madeon, we finally know what a proper Madeon take on Green Hill sounds like.
