We have spent the past week learning what Sonic will wear in Fortnite. Now we finally know something about what players will actually do with him there.

Epic Games has launched Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, and its full season overview contains the first proper description of the Sonic-themed gameplay built into the crossover. According to Epic, players will be able to race through Green Hill Zone using Sonic the Hedgehog’s Power Sneakers, bringing a playable slice of Sonic into the Battle Royale season rather than limiting the collaboration to Outfits, Sidekicks and cosmetics.

That is a fairly important addition to what we knew before launch. Green Hill has been all over Override’s promotion since the crossover began, but Epic had not previously explained exactly what players would be doing there. The new launch description now establishes a dedicated racing component built around Sonic’s Power Sneakers, although Epic’s article does not go into further detail on exactly how the sneakers are obtained, how their movement works, or whether they can be used outside the Green Hill section.

So, for now, we would resist turning them into a fully explained Fortnite item before actually seeing how the mechanic works. What is official is considerably simpler: Green Hill Zone is playable, you race through it, and Sonic’s Power Sneakers are involved. That gives the crossover an actual Sonic-flavored gameplay hook alongside Override’s wider collection of rule-changing mechanics, weapons and gaming collaborations.

The rest of Sonic’s launch package should already be familiar to Sonic City readers. Epic reiterates that Sonic headlines the Override Battle Pass alongside the Tails Sidekick, following yesterday’s full Battle Pass reveal confirming Sonic as an instant unlock, his Super Sonic transformation, Tails and the wider collection of Sonic cosmetics. And there is already more coming after launch. We also reported on the Shadow Cup, taking place August 21 and offering high-ranking players an early opportunity to earn Shadow’s Outfit, the Super Shadow Transformation Emote and Doom’s Eye Back Bling. Rather than going through all of that again, you can find the complete tournament and reward details in our previous coverage. Read our Shadow Cup coverage here!

The more interesting thing today is that Fortnite x Sonic is no longer something we are piecing together from teasers and trailers. Override is live, and somewhere on the Island there is now a Green Hill Zone waiting for players to put on Sonic’s shoes and start running.

For once, making Sonic ridiculously tall was apparently only half the plan.
