Just days after footage from Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds leaked online, Sonic Team creative officer Takashi Iizuka has spoken publicly about the broader dangers of premature game leaks. While he did not directly address the recent Sonic leak, his remarks underscore how disruptive such incidents can be to both marketing strategies and behind-the-scenes partnerships.

Speaking with VGC during Summer Game Fest, Iizuka expressed concern through a translator. “From a publishing perspective, the publisher is always trying to control, plan, organise and present information and surprises to people to have the most fun and get the most attention — to get people as excited as best as possible.”

He explained that leaks interfere with this process. “A lot of the people who leak this information are ruining that experience. They’re ruining the plans that people have put into place.”

Beyond disrupting announcements, Iizuka also noted that leaks can carry serious business consequences. “In the event that you’re dealing with licensed content, sometimes that leak will destroy a deal, and now you can’t do some stuff because someone leaked something.”

The timing of these comments is notable. SEGA’s Summer Game Fest showcase officially confirmed several major additions to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds — including crossover racers like Hatsune Miku, Ichiban Kasuga from Like a Dragon, and Joker from Persona 5, as well as Minecraft content and themed tracks. Many of these details had already surfaced online through earlier leaks.

Although fans reacted positively to the official announcements, Iizuka’s words highlight how leaks can jeopardize the effort and coordination involved in bringing cross-franchise content to life. Carefully timed reveals are not just for show — they often reflect sensitive licensing agreements and strategic rollouts.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is set to launch September 25, 2025 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. A version for Nintendo Switch 2 has also been confirmed, with a paid upgrade option for current Switch players.
