A new rumor is gaining traction in the Sonic community, teasing a surprising crossover that could bring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and SpongeBob SquarePants into Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The source? Twitter user @p0wyful, who accurately leaked game details ahead of its reveal, claims that Paramount-owned characters could become playable racers in the upcoming title.

At first glance, this might seem unlikely—but it actually makes a lot of sense. Paramount currently controls the Sonic movie franchise as well as several other high-profile IPs, including the TMNT and SpongeBob. With CrossWorlds confirmed to feature dimension-hopping gameplay, the idea of Sonic racing alongside Leonardo or SpongeBob isn’t all that far-fetched.

Sonic is no stranger to unusual crossovers in racing games. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed featured Wreck-It Ralph and even Danica Patrick, proving that SEGA isn’t afraid to get experimental. Meanwhile, the Turtles and SpongeBob have made appearances in other games like Rocket League and PowerWash Simulator, showing they’re no strangers to cross-media cameos.

If the rumor turns out to be true, it would mark the first crossover between Sonic and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—two icons of ‘90s pop culture who also share a publisher in IDW for their comic book runs. Imagine what a Shadow vs. Raphael rivalry could look like, or SpongeBob racing in a bubble kart.

SEGA is expected to show more of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds during Summer Game Fest on June 6, making it the perfect moment to confirm or debunk this wild rumor. Whether or not the crossover happens, the buzz is already building.

I think Sonic and TMNT would get along really well, actually.
