The Road to Sonic the Hedgehog #100 is getting increasingly difficult to predict, and apparently we may need to start preparing tournament brackets.

AIPT has published Super Sonic Monthly #7, the latest installment of its recurring column produced in partnership with IDW and SEGA, bringing several new reveals for the Sonic comics. The biggest is our first look beyond the currently announced Blaze and Silver storyline, with Tangle and Whisper taking over for issues #92 and #93 before issues #94 through #96 apparently head in a direction that should make fans asking for a fighting tournament arc very happy.

Sonic City previously covered IDW’s wider Road to #100, which is structured as a series of connected mini-arcs building toward a larger story with major implications. At the time, we knew that Blaze and Silver would lead issues #89 through #91, but little had been revealed about what would follow them. Now we have the beginning of that next stretch.

Tangle and Whisper Take Over in Sonic #92

Sonic the Hedgehog #92 begins a new mini-arc written by Mark Bouchard with artwork by Bracardi Curry, and is currently scheduled for December 9, 2026. The story catches up with Tangle and Whisper after the pair have a difficult conversation and decide to spend some time apart. That attempt at cooling off does not last particularly long, as a mysterious fog descends over Spiral Hill while Tangle is still inside.

Whisper and her Wisps enter the fog to find her, only for the situation to become considerably stranger. Reality begins distorting around Whisper, changing both her perception of Spiral Hill and, more worryingly, Tangle herself. IDW is even teasing the pair as potentially having to face one another, making this considerably more than a simple rescue mission. Sonic Editorial separately confirmed that issues #92 and #93 will explore what comes next for Tangle and Whisper now that Mimic is out of the picture, while making it clear the duo will continue having adventures of their own alongside their wider role supporting Sonic.

The issue will feature a main cover by Adam Bryce Thomas, a Cover B by Alex Forrest, and a 1:15 retailer incentive variant by Nathalie Fourdraine.

Are We Getting a Sonic Fighting Tournament?

Then things get particularly interesting.

Asked directly whether the IDW series could ever feature a fighting tournament arc, Sonic Editorial pointed readers toward Sonic the Hedgehog #94 through #96, saying fans interested in that idea should pay especially close attention to those three issues. The team stopped short of outright announcing a full tournament storyline, but also suggested that if readers enjoy whatever is planned, a larger version could potentially happen in the future, complete with fans making their own brackets.

So no, we cannot quite start calling #94-96 the Sonic Tournament Arc just yet. But IDW responding to a question about one by essentially saying “watch these three issues” is about as subtle as Sonic approaching a loop at full speed.

It also gives the Road to #100 a much clearer shape. Issues #89 through #91 belong to Blaze and Silver, #92 and #93 shift toward Tangle and Whisper, and #94 through #96 now appear set to move into some form of fighting-focused storyline before the series enters its final stretch toward the milestone. IDW previously confirmed that these mini-arcs are connected as part of a larger narrative rather than functioning as unrelated stories.

Shadow Is Probably Coming for Issue #100

And that larger story may require the Ultimate Life Form.

When a reader asked whether Shadow and Blaze would ever appear together, Sonic Editorial gave a deliberately playful answer before adding that the answer is “yes, probably,” because Sonic may need plenty of support when issue #100 arrives. That is not a formal cast announcement, but it is the clearest hint yet that Shadow is likely to be involved in the landmark issue.

Considering how deliberately IDW has been building toward #100, that comment also gives us another small clue about its potential scale. Sonic Editorial previously described the Road to #100 as leading toward something with major implications for the cast, and suggesting Sonic will need “a lot of support” certainly does not make whatever is waiting at the finish line sound particularly relaxing.

Sonic x Godzilla #4 Puts Shadow at the Center of the Obsidian Emerald Mystery

Shadow is also getting a much more immediate role in Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #4, with AIPT revealing the first substantial details for the penultimate issue of the five-part crossover.

The issue is written by Nick Marino, with artwork by Jack Lawrence, colors by Reggie Graham, and lettering by Ed Dukeshire, and will release on November 11, 2026. The new solicitation reveals that Shadow somehow becomes the key to unlocking the power of the Obsidian Emerald, with Dr. Eggman planning to combine that power with Mechagodzilla’s technology. Meanwhile, the situation has gone thoroughly off the rails elsewhere: Godzilla is attacking Station Square, Shadow has gone missing, and Eggman has stolen Mechagodzilla, leaving Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Mothra trying to clean up the interdimensional disaster.

The issue will receive a Cover A by Jack Lawrence and Reggie Graham, Cover B by legendary Godzilla artist Bob Eggleton, and a 1:15 retailer incentive variant by Natalie Haines. Sonic Editorial also confirmed that there are currently no additional comic crossovers in development beyond the already announced projects, although the team would like to do more in the future.

Super Sonic Monthly #7 additionally includes an extended preview of Sonic the Hedgehog #89, which launches the previously announced Blaze and Silver arc on September 9. That story brings the pair to Blackwood the Ermine’s castle, where Silver begins noticing that the apparently cheerful staff are behaving with suspicious uniformity. It is our next immediate stop on the Road to #100, but the more tantalizing material this month is what IDW has now placed beyond it.

Tangle and Whisper dealing with a reality-warping fog. Three issues that apparently have something for everyone demanding a fighting tournament. Shadow being positioned for both the Obsidian Emerald storyline and, probably, issue #100 itself.

Whatever IDW is building toward, the Road to #100 is starting to look considerably busier.
