IDW Confirms Shadow Will Play a Major Role in the Final Chapters of Road to Sonic #100

Shadow the Hedgehog won’t be sitting out the final stretch of IDW’s Road to Sonic the Hedgehog #100! The comic’s editorial team has confirmed that the Ultimate Life Form will have a “very large role” in the closing chapters of the ongoing storyline, giving fans something to look forward to as the series approaches its milestone issue.

The confirmation comes from the Sonic Letters Squad section of Sonic the Hedgehog #91, where a young reader named Lauren wrote to IDW about her dream of drawing Sonic comics and asked whether her favorite character, Shadow, would have an important part to play in the current arc.

IDW’s response left very little room for doubt:

I am happy to let you know that Shadow will play a very large role in this arc, especially in the final few chapters! There’s no way he would miss all of this action!

This isn’t the first time IDW has hinted at Shadow getting involved. Back in August, Sonic City reported on an earlier exchange in which Sonic Editorial responded to a question about Shadow and Blaze appearing together with a rather teasing “yes, probably,” suggesting that Sonic would need plenty of help when issue #100 arrived.

Well, it seems Shadow’s involvement is no longer a question of if, but how big a part he’ll play.

The Road to #100 has been unfolding through a series of connected mini-arcs since issue #82, with IDW previously confirming that they’re all building toward a larger event with major implications for the cast. The latest storyline, featuring Silver and Blaze’s encounter with Blackwood the Ermine, concludes in issue #91, before Tangle and Whisper take over for issues #92 and #93.

Beyond that, IDW has been teasing something involving a fighting tournament for issues #94 through #96, although the exact nature of that storyline remains under wraps. With the final chapters still largely a mystery, it’ll be interesting to see where Shadow fits into everything, especially given how much trouble Sonic and his friends are apparently heading toward.

Sonic the Hedgehog #91 is scheduled for release on October 28, 2026, with writing by Evan Stanley and artwork by Adam Bryce Thomas. You can also check out our spoiler-free review of the issue ahead of its release.
