Would you believe us if we told you there is a Sonic Adventure 2 Fan Musical currently in production?

Since 2021, co-directors Lambpaca and Wolpertinger of Conjunction of Errors Production House have been working with a handpicked team of animators, voice actors, musicians, and more to create a feature-length animatic of truly tremendous proportions.

Sonic has some iconic music,” said Lambpaca, who has two decades of theater experience. “Making a musical just seemed inevitable, and it’s a surprise it hasn’t been done already.”

Lambpaca had been playing around with the notion for several years, drafting concepts and discussing ideas with several people, including Evan Stanley. It was actually a public Tumblr message between him and Stanley about the project that alerted Wolpertinger of its existence.

“I sent Lamb my resume,” Wolpertinger said. “The whole thing, with my legal name and everything. I actually sent it in from my sideblog by mistake. Didn’t matter. I wanted in.”

The initial submission had been in regards to editing the production. Wolpertinger, who has loved Sonic since the early 2000s and is currently wrapping up their postgraduate degree in English, figured the worst Lamb could tell them was, ‘no.’

“I didn’t need the resume,” Lambpaca said, laughing.

Since then, the pair have become not just co-directors, but genuine friends; collaborative phone calls consumed nearly every day. Writing, rewriting, and re-rewriting became the focus.

“How do you surprise people who already know the ending, right? That was the question.” Lambpaca laughs about it now, but at the time, it was a difficult tightrope to walk.

“My goal in writing this was to stick to the established plot of the game as closely as possible, and any twist we put in, it needed to still fall in line with the canon that was established way back in 2001,” Wolpertinger said. “So we played with it a little. There’s more elements of horror, there’s more character interaction, there’s more worldbuilding. We weren’t trying to recreate SA2 with singing. What would be the point in that? No, this was an exercise in making something familiar but also, a little new. Ultimately, I think we met that goal.”

In early ‘22, a final draft solidified. From there, it was a matter of finding others who believed in this project just as its originators. Then, the search had begun. Casting calls were posted. Letters of interest were sent. Slowly, a cast and production team started to form.

AL is one of those people. Known online as ALtheBoi, he is a man of many skills, as well as host of a YouTube channel that boasts 40.9K subscribers. He is a fantastic video editor, commentator, and gamer, but he may be best known for his in-depth analysis of both the characters and the music of Sonic. “With a community as dedicated and talented as ours, it’s rare for a project to genuinely fascinate and intrigue me based on the pitch alone.” When he received a letter asking him to join the project as a dramaturg and consultant, he was thrilled. “‘SA2 Musical’ sounds like one of those crazy concepts that every Sonic fan randomly daydreams about while listening to the OST. The novelty alone is enough to make me giddy, so imagine my awe as I was met with some of the most professional productions I’d ever seen in a fan-made project. Actually seeing this pipe dream take shape has been nothing short of amazing!” AL trills at the fact that every member of the crew has put in, ‘110%’ with every aspect of this musical. “It’s honestly incredible what they’ve managed to accomplish, and it’s an honor to be a part of it.”

Ebetto has been on the production staff for several years. “Working on the SA2 Musical has been an absolute joy and such a great source of inspiration and learning for me,” she said. “Wolp and Lamb have a great passion and it sneaks its way into everyone’s work.” A beloved artist and streamer in the Sonic fandom, Ebetto feels right at home in the animation department. If you happened to watch the Pumpkin Hill teaser posted to the SA2 Fan Musical accounts on Tumblr and Bluesky put out around October of 2024, then you have seen her work. “The charm from the voice actors’ skills and the character-driven songs really pull you into the whole project, like every corner and aspect of creation has something new and exciting for you to explore. Drawing alongside the fun lines and cooking up camera angles for the actions always poses an interesting challenge but I believe the results we’ve come up with will blow you all away! I can’t wait for everyone to see what the whole team’s been cooking up!”

Dream Kittu is the SA2 Fan Musical’s Music Department Lead. She is a well established musician within several fandom communities, Sonic included. “Back in a month I can’t remember of 2022, I was approached by the SA2 Musical team to help write the music for their project. I never thought that 3 years later, I would be the hyper-invested musical director.” Dream, known for her fantastic covers, remixes, and reimaginings of various music pieces, is very much in her element with this musical. “My role is simple on paper: write musical numbers for Sonic and his friends. My personal challenge was to incorporate the existing SA2 soundtrack as much as possible, but give it some original twists and make it fresh and fit for the musical format.” Some numbers in the production have been a breeze, but others have been exceedingly difficult. Dream recounts one of Shadow’s songs in particular requiring several meetings and revisions. “It’s been challenging, but at the end of the day I have a major respect for the directors’ vision and interpretation of the characters and I want nothing more than to get it as perfect as possible.”

“To say I’m ecstatic about playing such an iconic role in this incredible project would be an understatement,” said Michael DiVirgilio. “The same energy and excitement I felt as a kid playing the Sonic games and watching the animated shows has come rushing back ever since I was cast as Sonic.” He gushes with love for every member of this project. Their talent, their passion, and their heart, he stated, is what makes this musical something truly special. Being a part of this production, especially as the voice of the blue blur himself, is an honor to DiVirgilio. “I truly hope I can do justice to the legacy of those who voiced this adventurous speedster before me. I know fans are going to love the music, the animation, and the amazing lineup of voice talent we’ve assembled. This project is a celebration of everything we love about Sonic—and I can’t wait for everyone to see it!”

Neither can Lampbaca or Wolpertinger. Both directors are excited for everyone to finally experience the product of such hard work and dedication.

“I want everyone to go far, and with a massive piece of work like this, the greatest reward would be knowing that someone put this on a resume,” said Lambpaca. “I think, if every person who put time, effort, and love into this is proud of what they did, then we did the right thing. Feels weird getting philosophical about a musical about a hedgehog. Technically, two hedgehogs.”

The musical is set to release within the next two years. Until then, keep an eye on the official SA2 Fan Musical accounts on Bluesky and Tumblr

why does the logo look like all the lines blur and merge and melt into the other colors so randomly and nonsensically.

looks like it was almost ai generated. feel like a hand drawn logo wouldn’t accidentally put green blobs in a plain blue stripe or blend the blue line and the black outline.

can’t say a fan project having such a questionably ai logo is a good look.

Its not AI, the logo was prexisting and needed to be edited at a last minute notice- the blurred lines were a different resolution from the text.
AI will not ever touch this project, neither directors will ever allow it on a project like this.

Hi, I’m the artist! When I made the artwork for the logo, it was 2021 and I was drawing on a 3ds! I did not have a graphics tablet yet! You can see an archive of my work here: https://www.colorslive.com/artist/draininkiss

I don’t appreciate you saying my art is AI generated when I was literally drawing it on a tiny, miniscule screen for hours on end. You can actually find the finished image and the initial draft here: https://imgur.com/a/TOm6hD7

Next time just say the art sucks xD I’d rather that than you say it looks AI generated because it’s a 240p image that got blown up, man.
