Sonic and the Secret Rings just got the second chance fans have been building toward for years.
Fan remake Project Reignition has officially reached Version 1.0, completing its recreation of the 2007 Wii game’s single-player adventure and bringing the full story to modern computers with overhauled controls, visuals, performance and a long list of additional features.
Rather than functioning as a straight PC port, Project Reignition rebuilds Secret Rings around the idea of preserving what worked while addressing many of the frustrations that became attached to the original release.
The remake replaces the Wii game’s motion-heavy control setup with traditional controller support, while also reworking elements of Sonic’s movement and the Skill system so players do not need to spend the opening hours gradually unlocking basic improvements just to make him feel comfortable to control. The project’s own documentation also highlights changes including clearer story-critical mission indicators, streamlined Skill Ring management and smoother handling of abilities such as Time Break.
Version 1.0 marks the point where players can finally experience the complete main story, including the worlds and stages that were still missing from earlier public builds.
Sonic City previously covered Project Reignition during SAGE 2025, when its playable demo stretched from Sand Oasis through Skeleton Dome, covering six worlds while the concluding portions of the adventure were still under development. That version already featured new environments, more than 15 remixes and original compositions, over 50 Skills and Augments and aspect-ratio support extending all the way to 21:9 ultrawide.
The v1.0 release now carries that work through the rest of the game, making this the first completed story build rather than another incremental demo.
That also means players can finally run through the entire Arabian Nights adventure without being tied to the original Wii presentation.
Alongside the rebuilt graphics and performance work, Project Reignition supports multiple aspect ratios, including 16:9, 16:10 and 21:9, making one of Sonic’s most visually distinctive Wii adventures considerably easier to revisit on modern displays. Earlier builds also supported keyboard and a wide range of controllers across Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo hardware.
The remake goes beyond presentation changes too.
Version 1.0 adds features including Time Attack modes, Skill Presets and mod support, opening the finished campaign up to both repeat runs and community-made modifications after players reach the end.
Skill Presets are particularly useful given how central customization is to Secret Rings. Previous releases already allowed players to save configurations rather than reconstructing a loadout from scratch each time, while the wider Skill system has been heavily rebalanced throughout development.
The project has also expanded the original game’s soundtrack with additional music and remixes, continuing work already visible in the SAGE build, which included more than 15 new arrangements and compositions.
There is still one major piece of the Wii original waiting in the wings, however.
Party Mode is not included in the initial v1.0 release.
The release trailer confirms that the multiplayer component is planned for a future update, with Project Reignition taking things a step beyond the original by adding online multiplayer support when it arrives.
For now, the focus is the complete single-player adventure.
The project is available for Windows, while Linux and Steam Deck builds are also supported through the project’s wider distribution ecosystem. A macOS build has also been released alongside v1.0 according to the current project distribution information supplied for the launch. Steam Deck users have additionally had access to dedicated Linux tooling and builds developed around Project Reignition.
As always with fan projects, there is an important distinction to make: Project Reignition is unofficial and unaffiliated with SEGA. Its developers distribute the remake as freeware and explicitly state that it should never be sold.

For a Sonic game whose reputation has long been tied as much to its unconventional controls as its soundtrack and setting, completing a ground-up fan rebuild is a pretty substantial milestone.
The Wii version is still there for anyone who wants the original experience.
Everyone else now has another way into the Arabian Nights.
