We already knew what Android Sonic was doing in Fortnite. Now Takashi Iizuka has explained why he needed to exist in the first place.

Speaking with IGN, the Sonic Team head revealed that Epic Games first approached SEGA about bringing Sonic into Fortnite more than a couple of years ago, only for the collaboration to run into a fairly fundamental problem.

Sonic and guns apparently do not mix.

“Sonic is a character that will never hold a gun.”

That becomes something of an issue when the game you are trying to put him in is Fortnite.

Iizuka explained that Sonic Team found it difficult to imagine the actual Sonic participating naturally in a game built around players picking up and firing weapons. Rather than abandoning the collaboration or changing that rule for the character, SEGA and Epic found another solution: make a Sonic who is not actually Sonic.

The result was Android Sonic, the taller robotic counterpart now running around Fortnite: Override. Because this version is explicitly an artificial recreation of the character, Iizuka says SEGA was comfortable allowing him to pick up guns and participate properly in Fortnite’s existing gameplay without applying the same restriction it places on Sonic himself.

That gives us an interesting bit of behind-the-scenes context for something Sonic City has already covered extensively. When the Fortnite x Sonic the Hedgehog comic was released during August’s New York Chaos Hunt, it established that the unusually proportioned versions of Sonic, Shadow and Knuckles were mechanical counterparts created by Dr. Eggman before being reprogrammed by Tails using their biodata.

At the time, that provided the in-universe explanation for why Sonic and company suddenly looked like they had been stretched until they could fit a standard Fortnite character rig.

Iizuka has now given us the real-world design explanation behind at least Sonic’s transformation: the robotic body was the loophole that allowed SEGA to put Sonic into Fortnite without having the genuine character sprinting around Green Hill with an assault rifle.

And once you know that, several other peculiarities of Android Sonic start making a little more sense.

He needs to function within Fortnite’s standard movement systems rather than constantly outrunning everybody on the Island. He needs proportions compatible with its character animations. He can swim like other Fortnite characters. And, most importantly for this particular conversation, he can use the enormous arsenal lying around without Sonic Team having to explain why Sonic himself suddenly decided that Spin Attacks were no longer getting the job done. The same Android distinction applies to the playable Shadow and Knuckles counterparts.

There is, admittedly, a wonderfully Sonic-shaped asterisk attached to Iizuka’s absolute declaration.

Fans were quick to remember Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, where Sonic is perfectly capable of participating in the Skeet shooting event. The 2007 Wii game quite literally has competitors move between shooting stations and fire at clay targets, and Sonic is among the characters that can participate.

Apparently Olympic regulations are more powerful than the Sonic brand guidelines.

There is also the much more obvious case of Shadow the Hedgehog, although that does not actually contradict what Iizuka is saying about Sonic. Shadow’s 2005 adventure famously made firearms a major gameplay mechanic, and Iizuka explained at the time that the shooting-action direction was deliberately being attached to Shadow as a separate brand, rather than introduced into Sonic’s own gameplay.

Nearly two decades later, Iizuka made the distinction between the two characters even clearer. While discussing Sonic X Shadow Generations in 2024, he said Shadow would use whatever was necessary to complete a job, including picking up a gun, although his own abilities usually make one unnecessary.

Sonic, apparently, does not get the same exception.

That makes Android Sonic more than a funny explanation for Long Sonic. It is an example of just how much work can go into making a crossover function when the rules of the two properties fundamentally disagree with each other.

Fortnite needs its playable characters to be able to use Fortnite’s mechanics.

SEGA does not want Sonic holding a gun.

So Eggman built Fortnite a Sonic who can.

Problem solved.
