What if Sonic Adventure 2 had opened with its own fully animated intro in the style of Sonic CD?
One Sonic fan has apparently been asking themselves that question for nearly 20 years.
Animator kotoriyrisuet has released Sonic Adventure 2 (OVA), a new fan-made animated short reimagining SEGA’s 2001 adventure with the kind of hand-drawn anime presentation associated with Sonic CD.
And this was not exactly a weekend project.
The creator says the animation took more than a year to complete, with the entire short produced as a solo project.
The idea goes considerably further back than that, though.
In a message included with the finished animation, kotoriyrisuet explains that Sonic Adventure 2 captured their imagination when they were just six years old, while the famous animated intro from Sonic CD made them dream of creating something similarly ambitious.
The goal was to combine those two influences, bringing Sonic Adventure 2 to life with the energy of Sonic CD while giving the animation a darker and more serious edge appropriate for SA2’s story.
Now 25, the animator describes finally completing the project as “closing a chapter” they had been carrying since childhood.
That is quite a long time to have Live & Learn permanently occupying part of your brain.
The finished short runs for just over two minutes and packs a considerable amount of Sonic Adventure 2 imagery into that time, presenting Sonic, Shadow, the Chaos Emeralds, GUN, and the game’s wider conflict through fluid hand-drawn animation.
Rather than attempting to recreate the game’s cutscenes directly, the project treats Sonic Adventure 2 almost as if it had received an anime opening of its own, using dramatic compositions, fast cuts, character animation, and visual callbacks to capture the game’s atmosphere.
The creator is also very clear about how the project was made.
Its YouTube description proudly declares “NO AI 101% CREATED WITH MY HANDS AND TEARS,” with the animator emphasizing the amount of personal work that went into completing the short.
Several other artists are credited as important visual influences.
kotoriyrisuet specifically points viewers toward F-Sonic, also known as SoinaSauceArt, and koku_zi, whose artwork helped inspire the visual direction of the animation. F-Sonic later shared one of the pieces used as reference material while celebrating the completed project.
And the animation has not gone unnoticed by SEGA’s side of the Sonic community either.
The official Sonic the Hedgehog social account has acknowledged the project, giving the fan-made short a considerably larger spotlight shortly after its release.
That recognition feels particularly appropriate for something so clearly built out of affection for Sonic’s animated history.
Sonic CD‘s animated sequences have remained some of the franchise’s most celebrated visual material for more than three decades, while Sonic Adventure 2 continues to inspire artists, musicians, animators, modders, and fan creators 25 years after its original Dreamcast release.
This project essentially smashes those two things together.
And judging by the finished result, waiting nearly 20 years to finally make it was probably worth it.
