Sonic the Hedgehog is heading into space again! SEGA has announced that the Blue Blur will be featured in a special image transmission connected to Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration mission, better known as MMX, which is preparing to launch toward Mars and its moons.

The collaboration was originally revealed on September 19, with SEGA confirming that Sonic had been selected for test-image data transmitted through the spacecraft’s onboard camera system. The project received another spotlight during Club Chaos on October 9, when Sonic Creative Director Kazuyuki Hoshino discussed the mission as part of the franchise’s 35th anniversary celebrations.

Led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), with contributions from NASA and other international space organizations, MMX will investigate Mars’s moons Phobos and Deimos. The spacecraft is scheduled to launch on October 20, 2026, with plans to collect material from Phobos and return samples to Earth.

Sonic’s participation involves imagery used to test the spacecraft’s communication equipment. If the mission succeeds and the necessary data can be received on Earth, SEGA plans to share the special image transmitted from space.

To celebrate the collaboration, Sonic Team artist Yui Karasuno has created a new illustration titled The Blue Wayfinder, which was officially unveiled on October 10.

The artwork has also been turned into an original T-shirt, available through Amazon Merch on Demand since October 10. Fans can find the shirt through the Amazon product listing, with pricing and delivery availability depending on their location.

The MMX mission is expected to reach the Mars system in 2027, with its larger scientific goals focused on understanding the origins of the planet’s two moons and bringing a sample of Phobos back to Earth.

For Sonic, it means his next adventure will take place rather farther from Green Hill Zone than usual.
