SEGA has announced Sonic the Hedgehog: Memories and Beyond, a new short-form animated project coming later in fall 2026 as part of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 35th anniversary celebrations.

The animated short was revealed during the Sonic the Hedgehog Animated Shorts: A Frame-by-Frame Retrospective panel at Anime Expo 2026, where attendees were also shown a sneak peek at the upcoming project.

In Memories and Beyond, Dr. Eggman begins a new scheme to transform Metal Sonic into the ultimate fighting machine. His plan involves stealing Sonic’s life-data and using the power of the Chaos Emeralds to upgrade his robotic rival.

Faced with a stronger version of Metal Sonic, Sonic and his friends realize that defeating him will require more than speed and power. Instead, they must rely on the friendships they have formed throughout their many adventures.

The story appears set to explore Sonic’s history through the memories and relationships that connect the cast, while placing Metal Sonic at the center of another major conflict between Sonic and Dr. Eggman.

The announcement was made during a panel celebrating 35 years of Sonic animation. Moderated by Aaron Webber, the discussion featured members of SEGA’s Sonic art and animation team, including Takashi Iizuka, Austin Keys, and Jasmin Hernandez.

Special guests Tyson Hesse, Evan Stanley, and Alan Wan also joined the panel to discuss their creative processes and work across Sonic’s animated projects before the new short was officially revealed.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Memories and Beyond is scheduled to release later in fall 2026.
