Daniel Barnes is finally joining IDW’s main Sonic the Hedgehog comic, but that’s not the only project he has in the works! The writer behind Sonic the Hedgehog: Scrapnik Island has revealed that another miniseries is on the way, although he’s keeping its identity a secret for now.
Barnes celebrated his involvement in the ongoing series on October 13, reacting to the announcement of Sonic the Hedgehog #94 with a short message on Twitter:
ya boi’s finally coming to the main book 👀
Later that day, he followed up with another tease:
i also have a miniseries on the way too more on that later 😎
Barnes is already familiar to Sonic readers through Scrapnik Island, the four-issue miniseries that reunited Sonic with Mecha Sonic and introduced the abandoned Badnik community living on a remote island. He also wrote the Team Chaotix 30th Anniversary Special, released in 2025.
His next confirmed Sonic assignment is issue #94, which he’s co-writing with Evan Stanley, with artwork by Alex Forrest. Arriving in March 2027, the issue sends Surge and Kit into the wrestling-obsessed town of Pinfall Prairie as part of IDW’s Road to #100 storyline.
The newly teased miniseries is a different matter. Barnes hasn’t revealed its title, publisher, characters or release date.
There is one intriguing possibility, though. In October 2025, IDW’s Sonic editorial team hinted at another upcoming miniseries and a potential Sage spin-off. Those comments prompted speculation about what might be coming next, but nothing in Barnes’s latest posts establishes a connection between his project and the previously teased Sage story.
For now, fans have a confirmed return to the main Sonic comic and the promise of another miniseries to look forward to. Barnes says he’ll share more details later.
