Questionable Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 Image Shows Sonic and Shadow, but Is It Real?

Okay, this one is weird.

A supposed promotional image for Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override has started making the rounds online, showing what appears to be an absolutely enormous collection of video game characters gathered together for the upcoming season.

Among them are Sonic and Shadow the Hedgehog, naturally making the image particularly interesting now that the Sonic crossover itself is officially real.

The problem is that we have absolutely no confidence that this particular image is.

The picture spread rapidly across social media on August 15, with users identifying characters from franchises including Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Street Fighter, Halo, Tomb Raider, Kingdom Hearts, Pac-Man, and several others.

And it did not take long for people to start noticing that something was very wrong.

Pac-Man appears to be missing his eyes, and Crash Bandicoot looks noticeably strange compared with his usual appearance.

There is also a peculiar pink-haired, blocky-looking character whose proportions immediately drew suspicion, alongside several other oddities that led plenty of people to conclude that the image was either AI-generated, heavily AI-assisted, or simply a fan-made fake.

Sonic does not escape the weirdness either.

In the image, he appears with unusual mechanical pieces around his body that some users have interpreted as a possible attempt to adapt his proportions to Fortnite. Shadow, Tails, and Eggman meanwhile, apparently do not receive the same treatment, raising yet another question about what exactly we are looking at.

So, case closed?

Not quite.

According to the account that originally circulated the image, it was fake and had been created using AI. The account then reportedly deleted itself shortly afterward.

That would normally be a pretty definitive ending to proceedings.

Except the image has continued to attract scrutiny because not everything inside it looks equally suspicious.

Several of the characters appear much closer to established game or Fortnite assets, particularly characters such as Ryu, Master Chief, Lara Croft, Mega Man, and Spyro. One Twitter user also pointed toward similarities between clouds visible in the image and cloud assets Epic has previously used.

None of that proves the picture came from Epic.

A convincing fake could simply combine existing renders and assets with altered or generated material. In fact, that would provide one perfectly reasonable explanation for why some parts look convincing while others look like Pac-Man forgot an important appointment with his optometrist.

There is another possibility, though. The image contains visible WIP markings, and some fans have suggested it could represent an unfinished internal composition using temporary or incomplete assets rather than finished promotional art.

Again, that is speculation. And then we have the retraction itself.

Several longtime Fortnite followers have pointed out that leaked material being retracted as “fake” does not necessarily guarantee it actually was fake. Leakers occasionally panic after something gains too much attention, although that history obviously cannot authenticate an unrelated image on its own.

Basically, welcome to leak journalism in 2026.

What we do know is that Sonic’s crossover with Fortnite is real.

Epic Games has officially confirmed that Sonic will be involved with Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, which launches on August 20, 2026. The first official teaser showed a Sonic-themed area inspired by Green Hill, while another teaser subsequently pointed toward Tails through a flying item and suspiciously deliberate “sidekick” wording.

Earlier leaks had also already connected the season with a wider gaming theme, with names such as Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Persona, Tetris, Crash Bandicoot, and Kingdom Hearts circulating before this image appeared. Some of those claims have since gained additional credibility as Epic’s actual promotional campaign has rolled out.

So the characters appearing in this questionable image are not necessarily random guesses.

That still does not make the image authentic.

For now, the safest conclusion is simply that its origin remains uncertain. There are enough glaring problems that we would not present it as a genuine Epic Games leak, but enough contextual overlap with existing Override information that dismissing every element inside it would be premature too.

Fortunately, this particular mystery should not survive for very long.

Epic Games has scheduled the official Chapter 7 Season 4: Override trailer for Sunday, August 16, with the YouTube premiere currently listed for 9:00 AM PT / 12:00 PM ET.

So tomorrow we may discover that this was an unfinished glimpse at something real.

Or an impressively elaborate fake.

Or that Pac-Man genuinely decided he no longer needs eyes.

At this point, all three somehow feel possible.
