Sonic Blitz is returning online in stages as Rovio begins testing the game’s major version 2.0 overhaul.
Starting today, Sonic Blitz is available in the Philippines through a Technical Test on Android. From May 28, the game will also become available in Brazil, first on Android devices. The smaller relaunch is being treated as a live user test for the game’s new direction, allowing the team to collect feedback and insights for future improvements.
The team noted that Sonic Blitz is still not fully finished, meaning players may notice unfinished elements while development continues. For now, the game remains limited to Brazil and the Philippines, with no wider rollout announced yet.
The relaunch follows a major pivot for Sonic Blitz. The original version of the game was built around collectible card game mechanics, but the team says that version did not fully align with the long-term goals planned for the title. While the CCG concept had potential, several elements suggested it may not have been the right fit for the Sonic universe.
After months of work, Sonic Blitz has now shifted into a fast-paced, real-time Team Battle RPG. In this new version, players collect and upgrade characters, build teams, and run between battles to power up before taking on Dr. Eggman and his minions.
The biggest change is the new gameplay flow, which now alternates between Team Battler RPG combat and running levels. Battles take place in real time, with players able to use special abilities during combat to influence the outcome of each encounter. Between battles, players take control of Sonic in running stages where movement is no longer restricted to lanes, allowing them to collect Rings, dash through enemies, avoid hazards, and prepare for the next fight.

The current playable roster includes Sonic, Amy, Big, and Mighty. Tails and Cream are also present in the game, though they will become playable at a later stage. Characters can still be upgraded by collecting Cards and Coins, keeping collection and progression as a central part of the experience.
Cards have also been reworked. Character stats are no longer shown on the front of each card and can now be found in the character menu instead. These stats include Power, Attack, HP, and Rarity. A new card type, Ability Cards, has also been added. Each character has unique abilities, which cost Energy to use during battle. Energy regenerates over time, adding another layer of timing and strategy to real-time encounters.
Card collection and Albums remain an important part of Sonic Blitz, while the game’s currency system has been simplified. The available currencies have been reduced to Gold Coins, Red Star Rings, and Energy.

The update also brings new animations and attacks for all characters, giving the playable cast a refreshed feel for the challenges ahead. New levels are now accessed through a Story map divided into chapters, while the Blitz Journey progression track remains in the game with rewards for players to earn as they continue through the experience.

The updated description for Sonic Blitz frames the game as a fast-paced real-time team battle RPG, where players collect and upgrade characters, build teams, run between battles, and prepare for the next confrontation against Dr. Eggman and his forces. Players can open booster packs to expand their roster, use real-time techniques to target enemy weaknesses, and unlock new zones by progressing through battles and rewards.
Rovio says this new direction is intended to create a longer-lasting mobile game that better reflects Sonic’s identity through high-speed and exciting action. The team also confirmed that more characters from across the Sonic universe will be added as development continues.
One important note for current players is that progress may be reset after a few months. The team says it has not yet decided how player progress will be handled or compensated in the new version, but it wants original Sonic Blitz players to receive a reward. More details will be shared once those plans are confirmed.
With version 2.0, Sonic Blitz is moving into a more ambitious hybrid format, blending character collection, real-time strategy, and Sonic-style running into one updated gameplay loop. For now, players in the Philippines and Brazil will be the first to test this new direction before any future expansion plans are announced.
