A new piece of early Sonic the Hedgehog history has surfaced, thanks to a recently archived issue of Hippon Super magazine.

Sonic Retro user Black Squirrel discovered the screenshot while following uploads of Hippon Super issues on the Internet Archive. The image appears in the August 1991 issue, which includes coverage of the original Sonic the Hedgehog during its early release period.

The screenshot is notable because it shows a prototype version of the Buzz Bomber enemy with a different design from the final game. Instead of the large round eyes seen in the released version of Sonic the Hedgehog, this early Buzz Bomber appears to have visor-like eyes, giving the Badnik a noticeably different look.

Old gaming magazines have become an important source for rediscovering early screenshots, unused assets, and development-era details that may not have survived elsewhere online. In this case, the Hippon Super scan offers another rare glimpse at how Sonic the Hedgehog changed before its final release.

Sonic the Hedgehog first launched for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive in 1991, and discoveries like this continue to shed light on the game’s development, prototype visuals, and early promotional coverage more than three decades later.
