PSA 9.8 A++ Sealed Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis Copy Heads to Heritage Auction

One exceptionally clean copy of the game that started it all is about to go under the hammer.

Heritage Auctions is offering a sealed 1991 Genesis copy of Sonic the Hedgehog graded PSA 9.8 A++ as part of its August 28-29 Video Games Signature Auction, with the auction house describing it as the highest-graded copy of the original Sonic game it has ever brought to public auction across all variants.

And with a 35-year-old cardboard Genesis box, getting one into this condition is apparently considerably harder than keeping Sonic away from water.

The copy is a Made in Japan, Redwood City address, mid-production variant from 1991. Heritage explains that these printings can be distinguished by the Redwood City address on the rear of the box, while earlier copies used SEGA’s South San Francisco address.

According to Heritage, PSA’s May 2026 population report records just 19 examples of this particular Redwood City printing, with the auction copy sitting at the top of that group. More broadly, PSA has certified only 59 sealed copies of Sonic the Hedgehog across all known variants. For comparison, Heritage says PSA has certified 288 sealed copies of the original Super Mario Bros.

The A++ seal grade is particularly notable because of the packaging used for early Genesis releases. Heritage says the tube seam found on these games is especially vulnerable to splits, punctures and general handling damage, making exceptionally well-preserved unopened examples difficult to find. Only one other tube-seam Sonic the Hedgehog copy in PSA’s census has reportedly received an A++ seal grade.

The game itself hardly needs much introduction around here.

Released in 1991, the original Sonic the Hedgehog transformed SEGA’s new mascot into the face of the Genesis and helped establish the rivalry with Nintendo that would define much of the 16-bit era. The game eventually replaced Altered Beast as the Genesis pack-in title in North America, putting Sonic directly into the hands of new console owners and helping turn him into one of gaming’s most recognizable characters.

That history has increasingly translated into some fairly serious collector prices.

Heritage sold another sealed Made in Japan, Redwood City mid-production copy graded Wata 9.8 A+ for $38,750 in May 2025, although grading companies and individual copies are not directly interchangeable. The new PSA 9.8 A++ example therefore provides another interesting test of just how much collectors are currently willing to pay for extremely high-grade copies of Sonic’s debut.

It is appearing in an auction loaded with other significant pieces of video game history. Highlights include highly graded copies of Mario Bros., Super Mario 64, Super Mario Land, Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye 007 and Fortnite, alongside a Japanese copy of Pocket Monsters Blue carrying a PSA 10 grade.
