After last week’s explosive reveal of Minecraft, Hatsune Miku, Persona 5’s Joker, and Like a Dragon’s Ichiban as guest racers in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, SEGA dropped yet another teaser image on social media. But this time, the internet is not debating which character is joining next. They are debating geometry.

A mysterious triangular symbol spotted near Espio the Chameleon immediately caught fans’ attention. To some, the shape looked strikingly like the Triforce from Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series, igniting speculation that Link could be one of the next crossover racers.

However, seasoned Sonic fans and Japanese history buffs were quick to offer an alternative explanation. It is likely the crest of the Hōjō clan, a real-world symbol from 13th-century Japan often associated with ninja culture. Given Espio’s own identity as a stealthy shinobi, the placement makes thematic sense.

Fans weighed in quickly:

@Fantactx: “Guys it’s not a teaser for link to be in the game, it’s a symbol used by the hojo clan back in 13th century japan who were allies with a ninja clan which is why it’s near espio as he himself, is a ninja. A example of this being used for inspiration would be the triforce”

@NoahAFS: “No everyone, that’s not the Triforce next to Espio, that’s the symbol of the Hōjō clan, a Japanese samurai family. This does not mean Link is coming to CrossWorlds.”

@Shaddy_the_guy: “It is a pattern. It has been used in Sonic levels like Palmtree Panic. Sometimes triangles are just triangles.”

While the symbol’s resemblance to Zelda iconography is uncanny, this seems to be a clear case of historical reference rather than a hidden crossover. Still, fans have not forgotten the history of platform-exclusive characters in Sonic racers, like Banjo-Kazooie appearing in Sonic and Sega and All Stars Racing on the Xbox 360.

SEGA has also confirmed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, which could still leave the door open for future Nintendo-exclusive surprises. Stranger things have happened in Sonic’s crossover history.

So is the Triforce in Sonic Racing? Probably not. But until SEGA says otherwise, the speculation races on.

Am I the only thinking that Link from the Zelda franchise could be a guest character in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, but as a Switch & Switch 2 exclusive? 👀
