Sonic Rumble is finally set for its global launch on May 8, but not everyone is thrilled with how SEGA is handling the lead-up. The game, which has been playable in select regions since late last year, continues to receive new content that many fans—especially in North America—still can’t access. The latest addition is a crossover event called Sega Stars x Sonic Rumble, and while it brings in some exciting characters from classic SEGA franchises, the timing has already sparked backlash from longtime fans.
The event includes crossover content from Super Monkey Ball, Altered Beast, and Fantasy Zone. Players currently able to access the game are being given a free Werewolf skin from Altered Beast, while other characters—AiAi, MeeMee, Opa-Opa, Upa-Upa, Werebear, and Weredragon—are available through in-game purchases and event unlocks. SEGA also teased that more crossover content is on the way, but for now, this event marks the first major collaboration—and it’s only happening for players who already have access to the pre-release version.
This has understandably led to frustration. Although SEGA has said that “many” cosmetics will return after the global launch, there’s still no guarantee that everything in this event will come back. Fans who’ve been waiting patiently for months are now watching others enjoy exclusive content without knowing if they’ll ever get the same opportunity.
The backlash was quick to hit social media, especially in response to the announcement post on Twitter.
The event ends on May 7, just one day before Sonic Rumble finally releases worldwide. For many, that timing feels like a misstep. Fans likely would have responded better to a less character-driven event or something more low-key that didn’t carry the weight of iconic SEGA mascots. Until SEGA provides more clarity on if or when the event will return, it’s yet another reminder that staggered regional rollouts tend to leave a bad taste.
With the game launching soon on both Steam and mobile, fans around the world will finally get to experience Sonic Rumble for themselves. But for now, those locked out of the pre-release are once again left waiting—and hoping they won’t miss out on everything this first event had to offer.
