Welcome to another edition of Speedy Survey Results—formerly known as Community Poll Results—the awards show where YOUR voice is heard within the community!

This time, we ran a month-long poll asking our readers if they’d be interested in a Sonic Heroes remaster, following rumors of one being developed using Unreal Engine 5 (which we reported on nearly a year ago). Here are the results:

  1. Yes, I’ve been waiting for this! – 57.45% (54 votes)
  2. 🤷 I’m indifferent; I’d play it, but it’s not a priority. – 17.02% (16 votes)
  3. 🤔 Maybe, if they update gameplay mechanics significantly. – 15.96% (15 votes)
  4. No, I think they should focus on new games. – 9.57% (9 votes)

Out of 94 unique voters, the overwhelming majority—57.45%—enthusiastically supported the idea of a remaster!

It’s no surprise that Sonic Heroes still holds a special place in fans’ hearts. Despite its mixed reception from critics and players upon release, it was many fans’ first introduction to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. As the first mainline Sonic game released on multiple platforms following SEGA’s exit from the console market after the Dreamcast, Sonic Heroes marked a significant shift from the Sonic Adventure formula.

Featuring team-based gameplay and a packed roster of 12 playable characters (across four teams), the game allowed players to switch between Speed, Power, and Flight formations. Each formation altered gameplay, with Speed characters blazing through stages, Flight characters enabling aerial traversal, and Power characters smashing obstacles and enemies with ease. The game was a financial success, selling 3.41 million copies and holding the title of the best-selling 3D Sonic game until Sonic Frontiers surpassed it in 2022.

Since its original release in 2003, Sonic Heroes has seen limited re-releases. While a PC port exists, it’s plagued by bugs and requires purchasing a physical copy. A digital version was released on the PlayStation Network in Europe and Japan in the early 2010s, but U.S. players were left without access. With over 22 years having passed, it’s no wonder fans are eager for a more accessible and polished version.

A remaster or remake presents an opportunity to fix longstanding issues, streamline gameplay, and modernize the experience. Many voters voiced this sentiment, with 15.96% of respondents only interested if the mechanics received significant updates—like addressing the requirement to complete the game with all four teams to unlock the true ending (just saying!).

On the flip side, 9.57% of participants preferred SEGA to focus on brand-new games rather than revisiting the past.

And that’s a wrap on this Speedy Survey! What are your thoughts on Sonic Heroes? Would you welcome a remaster or remake? Let us know in the comments!
