Kronos Island[1]Sonic Frontiers | PROLOGUE. Sega. accessed 24 August 2022. archived 24 August 2022. Archived version is the first Open Zone area in Sonic Frontiers. It is one of the Starfall Islands, distinguished by grassy fields, forests, waterfalls, mountainous terrain, and the remains of the Ancients, including towers, ruins, and a graveyard.

During the events of Sonic Frontiers, Sonic the Hedgehog arrives on Kronos Island after being separated from Miles “Tails” Prower and Amy Rose while travelling to the Starfall Islands. Guided by a mysterious voice, Sonic begins searching for the Chaos Emeralds, enters Cyber Space through ancient Portals, and works to rescue Amy from a Cyber Cage while uncovering traces of the island’s former civilization.

Description[edit]

Kronos Island is a verdant, moss-covered island made up of grassy fields, forests, steep mountains, cliffs, rivers, and large waterfalls. As the first Open Zone field in Sonic Frontiers, it introduces the open-ended structure of the Starfall Islands, with wide terrain surrounded by water and a climate that can shift between rain and clear weather.

The island contains many ruins left behind by the Ancients, including stone structures, floating towers, grave sites, and other remnants of their civilization. Several of these structures are integrated into the island’s traversal routes, with Springs, Dash Rings, Dash Panels, Grind Rails, Black walls, and other gimmicks placed around ruins, cliffs, and open fields. Kronos Island also contains Cyber Space Portals, Chaos Emerald Vaults, and the Western Fishing Spot, making it a central location for Sonic’s early progression.

Although the island appears abandoned, it is inhabited by Kocos, Hermit Kocos, and Elder Kocos. It is also patrolled by enemies and Guardians, including Ninja, Tower, Squid, and Asura. Its Titan, Giganto, serves as the island’s main boss.

Other structures on the island include Dr. Eggman‘s base and Cyber Cages used to imprison Sonic’s friends, with Amy Rose being trapped on Kronos Island during the game’s story. The island also features various Challenge objects, such as Hourglasses, Target sphere mechanisms, ancient light panels, switches, torches, and other puzzle-based structures used to reveal sections of the map.

Features[edit]

Kronos Island is a grassy and mountainous Open Zone area with wide fields, forests, cliffs, waterfalls, rivers, and ruins from the Ancients. It serves as the first major explorable area in Sonic Frontiers and introduces many of the game’s main exploration systems, including Challenges, Cyber Space Portals, Chaos Emerald Vaults, Guardians, and Fishing Spots.

The island contains 25 Challenges that reveal sections of the map when completed. These include switch puzzles, Cyloop tasks, timed races, ancient light panel challenges, target sphere puzzles, and other short activities placed throughout the environment.

Kronos Island also features seven Cyber Space stage Portals, along with the Western Fishing Spot. The Cyber Space stages are used to earn Vault Keys for opening Chaos Emerald Vaults, while the fishing area allows the player to exchange catches and tokens for useful items, including progression-related collectibles.

The island’s enemies include standard robotic foes as well as four Guardian types: Ninja, Tower, Squid, and Asura. Its main Titan is Giganto, who is fought at the end of Sonic’s time on the island.

History[edit]

Past

Kronos Island was once inhabited by the Ancients, along with the other islands that make up the Starfall Islands. Their civilization left behind ruins, towers, Cyber Space Portals, and other structures across the island before they were ultimately wiped out by The End.

One of the Ancients who lived on Kronos Island was a young woman searching for her true love. Her memories later remained tied to a Koco, which Sonic the Hedgehog and Amy Rose helped during the events of Sonic Frontiers.[3]Sonic Frontiers. PlayStation 5. Developer: Sonic Team. Sega. 8 November 2022. Area: Kronos Island. "Amy: Don't! It's too dangerous! They were reunited... right before the end. / Sonic: They're together now. You take a minute. I'm gonna keep moving"

Sonic Frontiers

Before Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends arrived on the Starfall Islands, Dr. Eggman travelled to Kronos Island and set up a base there. After receiving a video call from Orbot and Cubot, he learned that Sonic and his friends had defeated D3-COY, a robot he had created to distract them. Realizing that Sonic was likely approaching the islands, Eggman rushed his work despite warnings from his AI that the system had not been tested. Eggman dismissed the concern, insisting that his coding was flawless.[4]Sonic the Hedgehog on Twitter. Twitter. 25 October 2022. accessed 29 April 2026

That night, Eggman uploaded the AI into a Cyber Space Portal. As the technology of the Ancients activated, the AI malfunctioned and Eggman was trapped inside the digital dimension.

After being separated from Miles “Tails” Prower and Amy Rose, Sonic escaped Cyber Space and found himself alone on Kronos Island. A mysterious voice addressed him, stating that he was the first entity to escape Cyber Space. When Sonic asked whether he could save his friends, the voice told him to find the Chaos Emeralds, defeat the Titans, and tear down the walls between dimensions. Sonic then entered another Cyber Space Portal and collected the blue Chaos Emerald.

Sonic soon found Amy trapped inside a Cyber Cage. After using heart-shaped Memory Tokens to free her, Sonic was affected by an unknown Cyber-like energy. Amy noticed the change and asked if he was all right, but Sonic brushed it off. As Sonic continued exploring the island, he met Amy several times, discussing her experience in Cyber Space and the ruins left behind by the Ancients.

Meanwhile, Eggman awoke in Eternal Highway inside Cyber Space.[5]ソニックフロンティア 超音速プレイングガイド(Sonic Frontiers Supersonic Playing Guide / KADOKAWA Game Linkage / ISBN 978-4-04-733644-5) Page 33 He recognized that the dimension was more advanced than anything he had previously encountered. Back on Kronos Island, after Sonic obtained the red Chaos Emerald, Sage summoned Giganto. Sonic ignored her warning not to attack the Titan and was quickly defeated. After recovering, Sonic concluded that he would need all seven Chaos Emeralds, and possibly some luck, to defeat it.

During their time on the island, Amy introduced Sonic to a Koco searching for their one true love. While helping the Koco, Amy became distracted by another Koco, a mother who had lost her children. Sonic helped reunite the family during the Family Gathering quest, which led to the acquisition of the green Chaos Emerald. When the mother and one of her children reunited, light rose from the two Koco toward a symbol in the sky before both collapsed lifelessly. Amy noticed that the other Koco did not react, while Sonic admitted that neither of them fully understood what had happened.

Sage later confronted Sonic and Amy, warning that Sonic’s actions could endanger the world. Amy rejected the accusation, arguing that Sonic was helping the Koco reunite with those they loved. Sage dismissed the idea of love and left. In another encounter, Sage questioned how Sonic could move between the real world and Cyber Space so easily. Sonic suggested it was because he was impressive and assumed Sage might know more, but she refused to explain further.

Sonic and Amy continued helping the Koco and reached a field overrun with wild brush. Amy suggested that Sonic use his new Cyloop ability to clear it, beginning the Spring is in the Air quest. After completing it, Sonic obtained the cyan Chaos Emerald. Inside Cyber Space, Eggman ordered Sage to monitor Sonic while also finding a way to free him. Sage reported that, although she was extending her control over the Ancients’ relics, she could only command a limited number of them. Eggman demanded to know when he would be able to leave, but Sage explained that, after running more than a million simulations, she had not found a safe method. Eggman ordered her to make his escape her top priority, while Sage stated that keeping him safe was her priority.

As Sonic and Amy followed the Koco, Sonic argued that they should focus on finding Tails, while Amy felt compelled to continue helping the Koco. A strange barrier appeared in the sky, seemingly taking them to the same place in another time, where Amy had a tangible body. They witnessed a humanoid Ancient running through a field under bombardment, with the Koco they had been following visible within the figure’s chest. The Ancient reunited with another of their kind before an explosion returned Sonic and Amy to the present. Amy found the two Koco lying lifelessly together and realized that the lovers had reunited just before the end. Sonic gave Amy time to grieve while he continued exploring the island.

When Sonic later reunited with Amy, she said she was still confused by what she had seen but believed she had witnessed a transcendent love. She expressed a desire to share that love with the world once the adventure was over, even if that journey might take her far away from Sonic. Sonic asked her to tell him about it when she returned.

Amy then noticed that a previously sealed region of the island had opened. There, Sonic encountered Sage again, who claimed that the puzzle before him was beyond modern understanding. Sonic solved it, opening a new route beyond the waterfall that led to Giganto. Sonic climbed the Titan, recovered the final Chaos Emerald, and transformed into Super Sonic. After defeating Giganto, Super Sonic saw a strange vision, and the mysterious voice told him that the next Titan, Wyvern, awaited on Ares Island. Before leaving Kronos Island, Sonic spoke with Amy, who was disappointed that she remained digitized but said she was starting to feel more like herself.

Sonic Speed Simulator

Main article: Kronos Island (Sonic Speed Simulator)

In Sonic Speed Simulator, Kronos Island appears as the seventeenth world. It is based on the Open Zone from Sonic Frontiers and can be unlocked after the player reaches Rebirth 46.

The world includes the Kronos Island Adventure questline, which is used to unlock Frontiers Sonic as a playable character. It also features side quests such as the Guardian Protocol Event, in which the player helps Sage on Kronos Island to find Koco and an ancient tech upgrade, unlocking Guardian Metal Sonic as a playable character. Its background music includes music based on Maybe If… from Sonic Frontiers.

Gameplay[edit]

Kronos Island is played mainly from a 3D perspective, with only limited 2D platforming sections. As the first Open Zone area in Sonic Frontiers, it introduces the player’s main methods of exploration, combat, puzzle-solving, and story progression. Platforming routes are spread throughout the island and use familiar gimmicks such as Springs, Dash Panels, Dash Rings, Grind Rails, Black walls, and other traversal objects, many of which have redesigned appearances for this game.

To progress through the main story, the player must collect the seven Chaos Emeralds. Four of them are obtained from Chaos Emerald Vaults, which require Vault Keys to open. Vault Keys are earned primarily by clearing missions in Cyber Space stages, including completing the stage, achieving an S-Rank time, collecting a required number of Rings, and finding all five Red Star Rings.

The island contains seven Cyber Space Portals. These stages use themes based on locations such as Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Sky Sanctuary, and Eternal Highway. To activate most Portals, the player must use Portal Gears, which are obtained by defeating Guardians. Kronos Island features four Guardian types: Ninja, Tower, Squid, and Asura, each appearing in multiple locations.

Vault Keys can also be obtained through the Western Fishing Spot. To fish, the player uses Purple Coins, which can be found while exploring the Open Zone and during Starfall events. Fishing allows the player to exchange catches and tokens for useful items, including progression-related collectibles.

Amy Rose trapped in a Cyber Cage, from Sonic Frontiers.

The remaining Chaos Emeralds are tied to story progression. After finding Amy Rose trapped in a Cyber Cage, the player must collect heart-shaped Memory Tokens to free her and unlock her story events. Memory Tokens are usually found by completing platforming routes and exploring the island. Amy’s quests lead Sonic to additional Chaos Emeralds and reveal more about the Koco and the island’s past.

Kronos Island also contains Challenges, which are short tasks used to reveal sections of the map. These include activating switches, using Cyloop on objects, hitting target spheres through hoops, racing to a waypoint before time runs out, and using ancient light panels. Completing all Challenges reveals the full island map and marks the island as 100% mapped.

Overview[edit]

Kronos Island is the first Open Zone field in Sonic Frontiers, becoming accessible after the player completes 1-1. As the game’s first island, it introduces the basic structure of Open Zone exploration through early Challenges, standard enemy encounters, Cyber Space Portal activation, Guardian battles, and the use of Cyloop.

The opening tutorial sequence teaches the player how to reveal map sections, defeat enemies, collect Portal Gears, unlock Cyber Space stages, and earn Vault Keys. This portion of the island ends with Sonic collecting the blue Chaos Emerald from a Chaos Emerald Vault, after which the player is given more freedom to explore Kronos Island.

From that point, progression is built around two main objectives. The player must collect enough Vault Keys from Cyber Space stages or the Fishing Spot to open the remaining Chaos Emerald Vaults on the island. When the player has enough keys for a Vault, a beam of light appears above it. The player must also collect heart-shaped Memory Tokens to free Amy Rose from her Cyber Cage and unlock her Main Story events. Additional Memory Tokens can be used to access Side Story conversations, with Main Story and Side Story locations appearing on the map once the relevant map sections have been revealed.

After Sonic collects six Chaos Emeralds, the A Grave Mystery puzzle becomes available. Solving it opens the route to Giganto, Kronos Island’s Titan. During the encounter, Sonic collects the purple Chaos Emerald from Giganto’s back, transforms into Super Sonic, and battles the Titan to complete the island.

Walkthrough[edit]

After completing 1-1, Sonic appears on Kronos Island and begins learning the basic structure of Open Zone exploration. The first route leads through a rocky path into a large clearing, where the player encounters the island’s first Challenge. Completing Challenges reveals parts of the map, adds points of interest, and can create new shortcuts across the island.

The first Challenge requires Sonic to run across three switches in a circle. Once all three are pressed, the Challenge is cleared and a seed appears nearby. The player can then use the nearby obstacle courses to collect Rings and heart-shaped Memory Tokens before continuing north to a tutorial for the Homing Attack. After clearing the tutorial, Sonic returns to the Open Zone and fights a group of standard enemies by chaining Homing Attacks between them.

Skill Pieces, Seeds and Skill Points

Defeated enemies drop Skill Pieces and seeds. Collecting enough Skill Pieces grants Skill Points, which can be spent on new abilities. Seeds are used to increase Sonic’s stats through Hermit Koco, while Kocos can be given to Elder Koco to improve Sonic’s speed and ring capacity.

The player is introduced to Sonic’s main upgrade categories early in Kronos Island. Attack is represented by a sword icon, speed by a shoe icon, defense by a shield icon, and ring capacity by a ring icon. These upgrades improve Sonic’s strength, movement, durability, and maximum ring count as the game progresses.

After the tutorial, Sonic moves ahead through more obstacle routes and reaches a small structure, where a cutscene shows enemies emerging from a portal. Defeating them opens the way forward. A nearby spring can be used to reach the building’s roof for more Rings and a Memory Token before continuing toward the island’s first Guardian battle.

Ninja Guardian Fight

The first Guardian encountered on Kronos Island is Ninja. Guardians are stronger than standard enemies and have larger health pools, unique attack patterns, and special combat behaviors. Against Ninja, the player should lock on and keep moving around it to avoid its quick blade attacks.

Ninja slowly follows Sonic and occasionally dashes toward him. If Sonic stands still, the Guardian can strike quickly. The safest method is to strafe around it, jump in with the Homing Attack, land several hits, and retreat before it begins its melee combo. Repeating this pattern eventually defeats Ninja, causing it to drop a Portal Gear. Collecting the Portal Gear opens the nearby gate and allows Sonic to continue.

Statue Puzzle

The next locked gate is tied to a statue puzzle and the island’s second Challenge. Three statues are placed in front of the gate, with the middle statue being movable. The player must rotate the middle statue until it aligns with the other two statues and faces away from the locked door. Once aligned correctly, the gate opens.

Beyond the gate, the player finds more obstacle courses, Rings, and Memory Tokens. After passing through the next archway, the game introduces Sonic’s upgrade menu and requires the player to unlock Cyloop. Cyloop is performed by holding the assigned button to leave a trail behind Sonic and then closing the loop. It can damage enemies, activate mechanisms, extinguish flames, uncover hidden collectibles, and solve several environmental puzzles.

The third Challenge uses Cyloop on three blue flames. Circling each flame extinguishes it and creates a rail shortcut back toward the 1-1 Portal area. Sonic then continues through more platforming routes and defeats another group of enemies, using Cyloop to launch them before finishing them with Homing Attacks.

At the top of the next hill, Sonic reaches a large throne-like Cyber Space Portal. The Portal requires the Portal Gear obtained from Ninja, but the mysterious voice informs Sonic that two Portal Gears are needed. A cutscene then introduces Tower, another Guardian type.

Tower Guardian Fight

Tower attacks by firing projectiles from a distance. The player must use Sonic’s speed and boost to avoid the shots while approaching the Guardian’s base. Once close enough, Sonic can target the bottom section and repeatedly attack it to knock away the rings that make up Tower’s body.

As Tower shrinks, it may move away and resume attacking. The player should regroup, lock on again, and repeat the process until the Guardian is defeated. Tower drops another Portal Gear, allowing Sonic to return to the nearby Portal and unlock 1-2.

After completing 1-2, Sonic returns to the Open Zone. A bridge appears across the battlefield where Tower was fought. Crossing it and climbing the nearby cliff leads to the player’s first group of Koco, which can be collected and exchanged with Elder Koco for upgrades to speed and ring capacity. Continuing up the cliff leads to the first Chaos Emerald Vault.

Chaos Emerald Vault – Blue Emerald

The first Chaos Emerald Vault introduces the main progression system for Kronos Island. Chaos Emerald Vaults hold the Chaos Emeralds and can be opened by spending Vault Keys. Vault Keys are obtained by completing objectives in Cyber Space stages, such as clearing the stage, reaching an S-Rank time, collecting the required number of Rings, finding all five Red Star Rings, and completing all stage objectives.

Once the player has enough Vault Keys, Sonic can open the Vault and obtain the blue Chaos Emerald. After the Emerald is collected, a cutscene reveals more of Kronos Island and the player gains greater freedom to explore.

The Journey Begins

After obtaining the blue Chaos Emerald, the player can continue exploring Kronos Island more freely. One useful early step is to clear Challenge M-003 northwest of the first Vault. This Challenge requires Sonic to hit a series of crystals with the Homing Attack, creating a rail shortcut that allows faster travel back toward 1-1 and 1-2.

From this point onward, the player can collect Vault Keys from any available Cyber Space stages, gather Memory Tokens for Amy’s events, fight Guardians for Portal Gears, complete Challenges to reveal the map, and explore side routes for collectibles.

Rescuing Amy

The first major story objective after obtaining the blue Chaos Emerald is to rescue Amy Rose, who is trapped in a red Cyber Cage northeast of the Blue Chaos Emerald Vault. Interacting with the cage begins a cutscene, after which the player must spend 6 Memory Tokens to free her.

Once Amy is released, she and Sonic speak briefly before Sonic gains the Grand Slam ability. Grand Slam allows Sonic to follow a successful counter with a stronger melee attack.

Getting Portal Gears

After Amy is freed, the player is encouraged to gather more Portal Gears by defeating additional Guardians around Kronos Island. By this point, the player has already encountered Ninja and Tower, while the remaining Guardian types on the island are Squid and Asura.

Squid

Squid is a flying Guardian that leaves a long purple trail as it moves. To fight it, Sonic must jump onto the trail and run along it toward Squid’s head while dodging projectiles. The trail locks Sonic into its path, so the player must use quick side dodges to avoid incoming attacks.

Near the end of the trail, Squid’s tentacles fire projectiles directly ahead of Sonic. The player should wait for an opening, boost toward Squid’s head, and strike it. After being hit, Squid descends closer to the ground, allowing Sonic to attack it directly. It remains dangerous even while grounded, so the player should attack briefly, dodge when needed, and repeat the chase sequence when Squid returns to the air.

Asura

Asura is a large Guardian found in open fields. Its weak points are located on the plates above its legs. To reach them, the player must wait for Asura to slam a leg into the ground, causing blue orbs to appear. These blue orbs launch Sonic upward and allow him to run up the leg.

After reaching the plate above the leg, Sonic must attack the large spike until it is destroyed. The second and third weak points add more hazards, including red orbs that damage Sonic and an energy shield around one of the spikes. The shield has a rotating opening, requiring the player to time Sonic’s entry before attacking the spike. Destroying all three spikes defeats Asura.

Chaos Emerald Vault – Red Emerald

The red Chaos Emerald is located near the center of Kronos Island, northwest of the Blue Chaos Emerald Vault. Before opening it, the player should gather enough Vault Keys from Cyber Space stages or other sources. Elder Koco can also be found near ruins south of the Vault, allowing the player to upgrade Sonic’s speed or ring capacity if enough Koco have been collected.

Opening the Red Chaos Emerald Vault triggers a cutscene and leads into Sonic’s first direct confrontation with Giganto.

Titan encounter

After Sonic obtains the red Chaos Emerald, Sage summons Giganto. Sonic is placed in front of the Titan and must use the Homing Attack to move along a chain of floating rocks toward its face. After reaching Giganto and attacking, Sonic is quickly overpowered and thrown through several pillars.

The encounter ends with Sonic defeated, making it clear that he cannot defeat the Titan without all seven Chaos Emeralds. Sonic then resumes exploration from the northeastern part of Kronos Island.

Hermit Koco

After the Titan encounter, Sonic can meet Hermit Koco. Unlike Elder Koco, who improves speed and ring capacity in exchange for Koco, Hermit Koco upgrades Sonic’s attack and defense using seeds. Red Seeds of Power increase attack, while Blue Seeds of Defense increase defense.

Hermit Koco can also exchange speed levels for ring capacity levels, or ring capacity levels for speed levels, allowing the player to adjust upgrades previously assigned through Elder Koco.

Find Amy: Reuniting Lost Lovers

After speaking with Hermit Koco, Sonic finds Amy again. Spending the required Memory Tokens unlocks another story event. Amy meets a Koco searching for its true love and asks Sonic to help. Although Sonic is more focused on rescuing their friends and escaping the island, he continues helping Amy and the Koco as part of the island’s main story progression.

Find Amy: Helping a Worried Mother

Amy next appears southeast of her earlier location. After Sonic spends more Memory Tokens, she introduces a Koco mother who has lost her children. This begins a mini-game in which Sonic must round up the young Koco and guide them back to their mother.

Round Up Baby Kocos – Green Emerald

In this mini-game, Sonic must herd the Koco children across a field toward Amy and the mother Koco. The children drop bombs as they move, and Sonic has three lives. If a bomb explodes near him, he loses a life.

The safest approach is to move the Koco forward while circling around newly dropped bombs, waiting for them to explode before continuing. Once all the Koco children are returned to their mother, the mini-game ends and Sonic obtains the green Chaos Emerald.

Find Amy: Chaos Emerald Containment

After completing the Koco herding mini-game and obtaining the green Chaos Emerald, Sonic must find Amy Rose again. Her next location is northwest of the red Chaos Emerald Vault. After Sonic spends the required Memory Tokens, a short story event plays, after which the next main objective becomes collecting the gold Chaos Emerald.

Chaos Emerald Vault – Gold Emerald

The gold Chaos Emerald is found near the center of Kronos Island, northwest of the red Chaos Emerald Vault. The Vault requires seven Vault Keys to open. After the player gathers enough keys from Cyber Space stages, the Fishing Spot, or other available sources, Sonic can open the Vault and add the gold Chaos Emerald to his collection.

Find Amy: Pursuing Love

After collecting the gold Chaos Emerald, Sonic must speak with Amy again near the gold Emerald’s location. Amy explains that the Koco they are helping believes their lover is somewhere on the other side of the nearby field, though they cannot find them. This leads into another story mini-game.

Clearing the Field – Cyan Emerald

In this mini-game, Sonic must clear weeds from the field using Cyloop. Creating a loop around patches of weeds cuts them down and adds to the player’s score. The goal is to reach 7,000 points within the time limit.

Bees appear during the challenge and chase Sonic as he clears the field. If Sonic is stung three times, the mini-game fails. The player can distract the bees by using Cyloop on flower buds around the field, causing the bees to move toward them instead. Smaller, controlled Cyloop circles are useful for clearing weeds while avoiding the bees. Completing the challenge rewards Sonic with the cyan Chaos Emerald.

Chaos Emerald Vault – Silver Emerald

The silver Chaos Emerald is located at the top of a large floating spire in the northwest area of Kronos Island. The Vault requires eight Vault Keys to open.

To reach the Vault, the player must climb a large stone structure using a spring, rails, balloons, pulleys, jump panels, glowing walls, dash rings, floating platforms, grind rails, and other platforming objects. Sonic begins by using the spring in the structure’s center to reach rails above, then follows a sequence of balloons and a pulley to climb higher.

Further along the route, Sonic uses a jump panel to pass through a loop and reach more grind rails. A glowing wall allows him to run upward and continue through springs and dash rings into the spire’s interior. After defeating a group of enemies inside, the player follows dash loops, floating platforms, grind rails, jump panels, a zipline, and more pulleys until reaching the silver Chaos Emerald Vault. Opening it grants Sonic the silver Chaos Emerald.

Find Amy: Wasting Time

Once Sonic has the silver Chaos Emerald, Amy can be found west of the silver Emerald Vault. After the player spends the necessary Memory Tokens, a cutscene plays in which Sonic and Amy argue about whether they should continue helping the Koco or focus on finding their friends. After the scene, Sonic returns to the Open Zone and must find Amy again.

Find Amy: Flashback

Amy’s next location leads to another story event after Sonic spends more Memory Tokens. This event reveals more about the Koco connected to the lovers’ story and shows part of the tragedy preserved in their memories. After the cutscene ends, Sonic must meet Amy once more.

Find Amy: The Final Clue

Amy’s final story event on Kronos Island takes place near the graveyard. After Sonic speaks with her and spends the required Memory Tokens, a cutscene plays and the nearby gravestone puzzle becomes available. The previously locked gravestones can then be moved, allowing Sonic to solve the puzzle and open the route toward Giganto.

Gravestone Puzzle

The gravestone puzzle requires the player to rotate the black gravestones so their beams of light match the markings on the ground and point toward the hidden Titan. Interacting with one of the movable gravestones shifts the camera to an overhead view, allowing the player to rotate the stones.

Several gravestones move together, making the puzzle more complex. Holding the interaction button highlights which stones will move in unison with the selected gravestone. From the default starting position, the puzzle can be solved by turning the west gravestone counterclockwise four times, the east gravestone clockwise eight times, and the north gravestone clockwise four times.

Once the beams are aligned correctly, energy connects the gravestones and opens the path to the Titan.

Reaching the Titan

After solving the gravestone puzzle, Sonic must head toward the waterfall and follow the route above the chasm. Behind the waterfall is a hidden spring leading to a sequence of springs and rock ledges. Climbing this path triggers a cutscene that sends Sonic above the waterfall and into the area where Giganto awaits.

Giganto Boss Fight

The battle with Giganto begins with Sonic needing to climb the Titan to reach the final Chaos Emerald. The player must run toward Giganto’s legs and use the blue rings along its body to climb upward. While airborne, time slows briefly, allowing the player to adjust Sonic’s position and aim for the ridges on Giganto’s body.

Red rings on Giganto’s body damage Sonic and can knock him off, forcing the climb to be repeated. After reaching Giganto’s torso, Sonic can follow another series of blue rings above the Titan’s head. Landing on its head allows the player to interact with the final Chaos Emerald Vault and obtain the last Chaos Emerald.

Super Sonic Phase 1

After Sonic collects the final Chaos Emerald, he transforms into Super Sonic and begins the true battle against Giganto. In this form, Sonic can fly, deals stronger attacks, and does not take normal damage, but his Ring count steadily drains. If the Ring count reaches zero, the battle is lost.

The main strategy is to stay close to Giganto’s head and attack aggressively. Giganto’s swipe attack can be parried when it charges with purple energy. A successful parry stuns the Titan and allows Sonic to follow up with a powerful attack. Repeating this pattern while maintaining enough Rings brings Giganto’s health down to the halfway point, triggering the second phase.

Super Sonic Phase 2

In the second phase, Giganto gains a laser attack. When the Titan fires the laser, the player enters a quick-time sequence in which Sonic must block and break free before too much time is lost. Outside of this added attack, the battle continues to focus on staying close, dealing damage, and parrying Giganto’s swipe whenever it charges.

During the final stretch, Giganto uses its swipe attack repeatedly. Parrying these attacks and following up with strong counterattacks eventually defeats the Titan. After Giganto falls, Sonic is told that more Titans remain, leading him onward to Ares Island.

Name origin[edit]

Kronos Island is named after Kronos, the youngest of the Titans in Greek mythology. Kronos overthrew his father Uranus and ruled during the mythological Golden Age before being overthrown by his son Zeus and imprisoned in Tartarus.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the Nintendo Switch version of Sonic Frontiers, an unused version of Kronos Island exists in the game’s files that incorporates the landmasses of Rhea Island and Ouranos Island into one larger landmass. This suggests that the areas were planned as a single island at one point during development.
    • Kronos Island and Rhea Island also share the same map, with some portions removed. Both areas can be reached from each other through a Super Launch, bypassing the invisible wall that normally prevents the player from crossing between them.
    • Director Morio Kishimoto stated that the islands were split after playtesters felt the original island was too large and boring.[6]Morio Kishimoto (@moq_46) on Twitter. Twitter. 11 May 2023. accessed 15 May 2023
  • Within the game’s code, Kronos Island and Rhea Island remain part of a single landmass. The player cannot normally travel between the Kronos and Rhea sections because of barriers such as cliffs and invisible walls, though glitches can be used to bypass them.
  • It is unknown whether Kronos Island and Rhea Island are intended to be two names for the same island within the story.
  • A 3D model made for Kronos Island does not include the arena where Giganto is fought. A leaked trailer of an older build shows the full version of Kronos Island with Giganto located in the arena used for Supreme, suggesting that Giganto’s battle may have originally been planned for that area.
  • Like Ouranos Island, the player cannot re-enter the area where Giganto is fought. On Kronos Island, the spring that originally launches Sonic up the waterfall is covered by a rock, while the spring on the platform above is blocked by an invisible box. Although the player can reach the waterfall through precise physics glitches, an invisible wall blocks access at the top.
    • This may be because the Giganto battle area is close to the Rhea Island section of the map, requiring the springs leading to Giganto to be blocked so the player cannot travel between the Kronos and Rhea sections.
