The game centers on exploring open 3D worlds inspired by locations from the Sonic series, collecting Chaos Orbs and Rings, completing quests, unlocking characters, and increasing the player’s speed and jumping power. Players can use abilities such as the Spin Jump, Spin Dash, Homing Attack, Drop Dash, and Boost, while also collecting and upgrading Chao, Trails, and other rewards. Playable characters include Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Shadow the Hedgehog, Silver the Hedgehog, Blaze the Cat, and many other characters and variants from across the franchise.

On 10 February 2023, Sonic Speed Simulator received a major overhaul that temporarily renamed the game Sonic Speed Simulator Reborn. This update wiped all player progress and significantly reworked core systems including map design, rebirth progression, pets, quests, and other gameplay features. The Reborn name was later removed from the game itself, though it has continued to be used in some official Sonic livestream contexts.

Sonic Speed Simulator became a major success on Roblox. It reached 70 million plays and 275,000 concurrent players during its first week, making it Roblox’s largest launch at the time, and later reached 500 million visits within its first four months.[4]Gamefam sees rapid growth in making games for Roblox. Gameplay[edit]

Sonic Speed Simulator is a 3D, third-person incremental platformer built around high-speed movement, character progression, and exploration across open worlds based on locations from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Players travel through large zones, collect Chaos Orbs and Rings, complete quests and events, unlock playable characters, and gradually increase their speed and jumping power.

The player originally begins as their Roblox avatar, though Sonic the Hedgehog is also treated as the starting character in later versions. Additional characters from the Sonic series can be unlocked through quests, events, codes, Golden Eggs, the Fast Pass, shops, and other limited or persistent reward systems. Playable characters include Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Shadow the Hedgehog, Silver the Hedgehog, Blaze the Cat, and many other characters and variants from across the franchise.

Most playable characters share the same core movement set, including the Spin Jump, Spin Dash, Spin Dash Charge, Jump Dash, Homing Attack, Drop Dash, and Boost. Certain characters and variants have unique or altered abilities, such as Chaos Snap, Chaos Blast, gliding, flight, parrying, or free flight. Some characters also replace standard actions with character-specific equivalents, such as Blaze the Cat using movements based on the Axel Jump and Spinning Claw instead of the traditional Spin Jump and Spin Dash.

Progression

The main progression system is based on collecting Chaos Orbs, which appear throughout each world and award experience points. Chaos Orbs come in multiple colors and increase the player’s level when collected. Experience can also be earned by completing Quests, entering Sky Rings, clearing Time Trials, and participating in other game activities.

Leveling up increases the player’s primary movement stats, mainly Speed and Power. Speed determines the player’s maximum running speed and affects how easily the player can run through loops, travel across walls, launch from terrain, and gain momentum from the Spin Dash. Power determines how high the player can jump, helping them reach Sky Rings, upper areas, and elevated paths. Both stats can be manually lowered in the settings, allowing players to adjust the strength of their movement without reverting to an earlier level.

Earlier versions of the game used a level cap system tied to rebirths. Before Reborn, the player could reach a maximum level, then Rebirth to reset their level and return to Green Hill while gaining permanent bonuses such as increased experience multipliers and ring rewards. After the Reborn overhaul, the fixed level cap was removed. Players can rebirth after reaching level 100, resetting their level and lowering their speed in exchange for Skill Pieces. Skill Pieces are used to purchase permanent upgrades, including multipliers for Rings and experience and increased damage against bosses. The number of Skill Pieces required for an upgrade increases each time that upgrade is purchased.

Rings serve as the main currency. They are found throughout worlds and can be earned through quests and other objectives. Rings are used to open Chao Vending Machines, unlock portals to new areas, and upgrade Chao and Trails. Red Star Rings are also used in several upgrade and shop systems.

Chao and Trails

Chao function as equippable companions that improve the player’s rewards or provide additional bonuses. Players can obtain Chao from vending machines, events, quests, shops, and other reward systems. Chao have different rarities, including Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Exotic, and Special. Their effects can increase the amount of XP and Rings earned from pickups, while some provide additional traits such as magnetism, luck, stamina, event bonuses, or damage boosts.

The player can equip up to three Chao by default, while certain purchases can increase the number of available pet slots. Chao share an inventory limit with Trails, though rewards earned from quests can exceed the normal storage cap. Chao can be leveled up at the Upgrade Machine, using Rings, Red Star Rings, or both depending on the Chao and its level. Five copies of the same Chao can also be brought to the Fusion Machine to create an evolved version with stronger bonuses.

Trails are equipped items that provide similar reward and stat benefits. Like Chao, they can be obtained through vending machines, quests, events, shops, and other activities. Trails can also be upgraded and evolved, increasing their effects. The player can equip one Trail at a time.

Worlds and quests

The game is structured around open worlds inspired by locations from across the Sonic series. These include recurring locations such as Green Hill, Lost Valley, Emerald Hill, City Escape, Hill Top, No Place, Cyber Station, Metal City Skatepark, New Yoke City, Space Colony Ark, Radical Highway, Pumpkin Hill, Autumn Forest, Metro City, and Cool Edge.

World progression has changed across the game’s life. Earlier versions used obbies, race requirements, or level and rebirth thresholds to unlock new zones. In the post-Reborn structure, worlds are tied to quest progression and Gate Keys. Each world includes quest-giving NPCs that assign objectives related to exploration, collectibles, enemies, Time Trials, and other activities. Completing quests awards rewards such as Rings, XP, Red Star Rings, Chao, Trails, and Gate Keys. Collecting enough Gate Keys unlocks portals to later worlds.

When Sonic Speed Simulator 2.0 first introduced the new quest structure, each world had multiple quests from main characters, and some limited or persistent events used the same system. Later, the Quest Overhaul and Golden Eggs wave 2 update reworked this into one Main Quest per world, which helps unlock characters and features such as Fast Friends.

Time Trials, races, and boss fights

Each world includes Time Trials, which challenge players to reach a goal as quickly as possible by passing through checkpoints. Completing Time Trials awards medals based on performance, typically bronze, silver, or gold, and can also contribute to quests and other progression systems.

Races have appeared in multiple forms. Legacy versions included world-based races such as Green Hill Race, Lost Valley Race, Emerald Hill Race, Snow Valley Race, Hill Top Race, Metal Madness Race, and Metal City Race. Later versions introduced Action Races and Drag Races, including races based on City Escape, Emerald Coast, Green Hill, Metal City, Metal Harbor, Metal Madness, Autumn Forest, Mirage Saloon, New Yoke City, Radical Highway, and other locations. Some races are tied to limited-time collaborations or events.

Boss fights were added as part of the game’s later structure. In the Emerald Hill boss fight, multiple players work together against Dr. Eggman, dodging attacks and destroying generators protecting his Egg Mobile. The player’s damage output is affected by pets and permanent upgrades. Faster completion grants more spins from the Boss Spin Wheel, which can award rewards such as Chao and temporary boosts. Other boss encounters include Neo Metal Sonic, Super Neo Metal Sonic, Infinite, Time Eater, Mecha Sonic Mark II, and Fang the Hunter.

Events and rewards

Sonic Speed Simulator regularly features limited-time and recurring events. These events usually require players to complete specific objectives, collect event items, defeat enemies, clear races, or participate in themed activities to unlock characters, Chao, Trails, mounts, and other rewards. Some rewards can also be purchased with Robux.

One early example was the Scavenger Hunt Event, where character card fragments appeared in certain worlds for a limited period. Collecting enough fragments unlocked Sailor Tails as a playable character. Later events expanded the system with story quests, new races, themed worlds, collaboration content, and character variants based on games, comics, animation, Sonic Channel artwork, and other Sonic media.

The game also includes daily and recurring reward systems. Before Reborn, Daily Challenges gave players a set of rotating tasks every 24 hours and awarded items such as boosts, Chao, storage upgrades, hoverboards, and character skins. These challenges were later removed. In the post-Reborn version, Daily Rewards were added as a login-based system that grants rewards every twelve hours without requiring task completion. If a player already owns a one-time reward such as a skin or mount, that reward is skipped.

Adventures and Challenges

Adventures were repeatable quests unlocked after the player completed a major quest line from one of the main zone quest givers or Dodon Pa. They refreshed every four hours and assigned a randomized set of objectives. Adventures rewarded XP, Rings, Red Star Rings, boosts, and extra Spin Wheel spins.

The original Adventures feature was removed during the main quest update, but a similar system was later reintroduced during the third Fast Pass under the name Challenges. Challenges apply to worlds with Main Quests and are divided into reward groups based on cooldown and world range. They primarily award additional tickets for the Fast Pass.

Spin Wheel

Main article: Spin Wheel

The Spin Wheel is a reward feature that allows the player to spend spins for prizes. It has been used after completing certain activities, such as obbies, races, or boss fights, and has awarded skins, Chao, Trails, boosts, and other rewards. During the Omega Update, the Spin Wheel was used to introduce skins such as Riders Shadow, Shadow Android Pink, and Shadow Android Blue.

Players could obtain spins through timed free claims, Adventures, boss rewards, or Robux purchases. Boss fights also use separate reward wheels. The Legendary Spinner was later introduced alongside the Tornado 2 and offers higher-value rewards, though spins are harder and more expensive to obtain.

Golden Eggs

Main article: Golden Egg

Golden Eggs are a recurring, typically monthly reward system introduced in the 2.80 update. The player opens Golden Eggs after walking a required number of steps, receiving a random reward that may include limited-quantity skins. Players can also bypass the step requirement by purchasing eggs directly, with premium eggs offering stronger reward pools. After opening 150 free eggs, the player receives three bonus premium eggs at no cost.

In some countries, the Golden Egg system is restricted so that players can only open free eggs, in compliance with Roblox rules and international laws regarding gacha-style mechanics. Bonus eggs remain available in those regions.

Fast Pass

Main article: Fast Pass

The Fast Pass is a recurring, typically monthly reward track introduced in the 2.92 update. Players progress through the pass by completing milestones and collecting event items such as Candy or Season Tickets. Rewards are distributed across levels, usually up to Level 30. Many newly added character skins are placed on the free track, while a premium track can be unlocked with Robux for additional rewards.

Clubs

Main article: Club

The Club system was introduced in the 2.132 update. It allows players to create or join collaborative groups and contribute to shared progress by collecting Chaos Orbs. Each player can contribute up to 15,000 Chaos Orbs per day, or 7,500 if a Roblox friend is in the same server. Club progress unlocks up to 40 rewards, including an exclusive VIP Sonic skin. Players also earn Club Coins, which can be spent on Vibes in the Club shop.

Mega Eggs

Main article: Mega Eggs

Mega Eggs, originally known as Mystery Chests, were introduced in the 2.140 update. They allow the player to spend either Red Star Rings or Robux to receive a random reward, which can include skins. The Red Star Ring option can only be used once every twelve hours.

In some countries, Mega Eggs are hidden and cannot be interacted with, in compliance with Roblox rules and international laws regarding gacha-style mechanics.

Codex

Main article: Characters in Sonic Speed Simulator

The Codex system was added in the 2.157 update as a way to track the player’s owned characters. Each character appears in a list with information on how to obtain them, such as through persistent events or trading with other players. Once a skin has been registered in the Codex, it does not need to remain in the player’s inventory to stay recorded.

The Codex also includes milestone and collection rewards. Reaching certain totals of owned characters, or completing themed character collections, rewards the player with SIM skins. A daily collection refreshes every 24 hours, selecting five characters from a larger pool and tasking the player with registering them. Completing the daily collection grants a sixth random skin as a reward.

Shops and purchases

Main article: Shops in Sonic Speed Simulator

The in-game Shop allows players to purchase game passes, boosts, characters, mounts, and other items. Game passes can increase rewards such as Rings and XP, add extra pet slots, grant stronger magnet effects, allow multiple eggs to be opened at once, provide double levels or Skill Pieces, or unlock all music in the game. A separate shop in Green Hill also offers Sonic-themed accessories and clothing, commonly known as UGC, for the player’s Roblox avatar.

Storyline[edit]

The storyline of Sonic Speed Simulator is primarily told through quests, events, and character interactions. Its events follow the player as they assist Sonic and his allies against Dr. Eggman, while also recruiting new characters, investigating strange anomalies, and dealing with threats connected to time, digital dimensions, and the game’s later Reborn overhaul.

The Rise of Metal Sonic

Before the early event storyline begins, the player has already teamed up with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, with occasional guidance from Omochao. Their first major conflict begins when Dr. Eggman discovers and uses the power of Pink Crystals, trapping Amy and her Chao Friends inside large crystal formations. The player learns that smaller crystals can counteract the effect, allowing them to collect enough energy to free Amy. Once released, Amy joins the player’s team while Eggman quickly retreats.

The destruction of the Pink Crystal causes a shockwave that damages the Master Emerald and scatters Knuckles’ stash. The player helps recover Emerald Shards, restore the Master Emerald, and reclaim Knuckles’ lost rings and keys.

Eggman’s next scheme involves the Chemical Plant, where Sonic infiltrates the facility to uncover the truth behind the Data Discs. Eggman captures Sonic and drains his power to activate Metal Sonic. With help from the player’s team, Sonic is freed after the Data Discs are recovered, but Eggman still prepares to launch Metal Sonic.

After foiling Eggman’s plans, the group holds a Beach Party, with Amy asking the player to gather Chili dogs for the celebration. Metal Sonic awakens during this period and moves to interrupt the party. Eggman uses Chao to power him up, but with instructions from Tails, the team races Metal Sonic and frees the captured Chao. Following Metal Sonic’s defeat, Tails reprograms him, allowing him to join the team.

Blast to the Past

After Metal Sonic’s defeat, the group celebrates Sonic’s birthday, only for Eggman to return and disrupt the festivities. Once his plans are stopped, Classic Sonic joins the team.

The story then moves into a firework festival, where the player helps Amy launch fireworks. During the same period, Tails misplaces his tools, and the team collects them so he can resume his work. Later, Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 appears and challenges the player and Metal Sonic to a race. After being defeated, he is also reprogrammed by Tails and joins the team.

Eggman then begins an attack on Green Hill using Buzz Bombers. With Tails assisting the player, Eggman’s forces are driven back, and the player receives the keys to the Tornado. Around this time, Froggy is lost in an area filled with Badniks, prompting Big to ask for help. The player and the team scare away the Badniks and find Froggy.

The storyline later introduces Knuckles challenging the player to prove their skill with hoverboards. After completing the challenge, the player receives several hoverboards.

Eggman then creates a dimensional portal to the past after destroying the Time Stones, causing Classic Tails to appear in the present while trapped in a statue-like state. As Green Hill destabilizes, Tails and the player restore the Time Stones, close the portal, and save Classic Tails.

Spooky Mysteries

Following the time-related crisis, the characters attempt to relax. Big asks the player to convince Knuckles to go camping with him, which the player does by collecting grapes. During this event, a mysterious chrome arm appears on the beach, hinting at a new mystery.

The player is then contacted by an unknown figure who gives vague instructions and appears interested in testing the player’s skills. After completing the challenge, the player receives a reward from the mysterious contact. The contact is eventually revealed to be Rouge, who directs the player to collect treasure for her, including the Tear of the Diamond Queen. In exchange, Rouge joins the team.

Jet later appears as a skilled rider who challenges the player. After testing the player’s abilities, Jet begins a competition with them in Metal City. Despite his insults, the player defeats him, leaving Jet frustrated.

Eggman soon returns to capturing animals. With help from Amy, the player rescues the Pockies in Metal City Skatepark. A separate mystery begins when a meteor crashes into Green Hill and scatters strange fragments. Eggman attempts to study the fragments for his own purposes, but Omochao and Tails help the team investigate first. Inside the meteor, Tails discovers bio-metallic versions of Knuckles, Tails, and Sonic.

To continue the investigation, the team seeks access to Pumpkin Hill, but the path is blocked. Omochao translates for Metal Sonic, who explains that the Boos around Green Hill must be destroyed. After the player clears them out, Pumpkin Hill becomes accessible.

Readings from the meteor fragments then lead the team to Pumpkin Hill, where Rouge disappears. The player and Knuckles search the area, clearing pumpkin roots and Pumpkin Ghosts before finding Rouge, who is now dressed as a witch. Sonic is later affected by Dark Gaia energy, which has readings similar to those of the mysterious meteors. Rouge attempts to create a potion to cure him, asking the team to collect seashells, volcanic crystals, and Witch’s Blossoms. Even after the ingredients are gathered, the potion fails.

Sonic eventually transforms into the Werehog because of the Dark Gaia energy. To stabilize him, the player is instructed to collect Sun Medals, defeat Dark Bats, and obtain Moon Medals from Orbot. After the task is completed, Sonic stabilizes the energy and is able to roam at night as the Werehog.

The End of Time

Some time later, Sonic disappears, and digital footprints begin appearing across the area. Tails works with the player to investigate, discovering that the footprints come from another dimension. Metal Sonic Mach 3.0 also goes haywire, and Tails captures him for answers. From this, Tails learns that anomalies in Green Hill are being caused by a digital dimension and concludes that Sonic has been trapped inside a digital version of his past. He asks the player to return once he has found a way to enter Cyber Space.

A week later, Tails discovers a method to reach Cyber Space. Amy reports hearing a voice telling her to collect enough Memory Tokens to save a friend. With the player’s help, the team collects the tokens and frees Sonic from his digital prison, although the anomalies continue.

Amy later notices Espio practicing ninja techniques because of the anomalies. She and the player train while waiting for Espio’s findings. Espio later asks the player to collect Elemental Scrolls to help expand his ninjutsu knowledge and gain insight into the end of time. While meditating, he mutters fragments about Sonic, shattering, and the end of time. Once his meditation is complete, Espio warns that a powerful force is about to wreak havoc and realizes that Sonic is central to the crisis before disappearing.

During the holiday period, Nine arrives in Green Hill due to the ongoing anomalies. Sonic suggests collecting gingerbread cookies and delivering presents to help Nine get into the holiday mood. Later, Sonic acts strangely after losing stickers while snowboarding, and the player helps collect them so he can rejoin the team.

Eggman then begins setting up dig sites in Green Hill to search for the Paradox Prism. Rouge and the player infiltrate the sites and collect Moonstones before Eggman can notice. Time and space become increasingly distorted because of Eggman’s actions, and Tails captures an Android Shadow displaying a strange message. The player completes Green Hill Time Trials to collect Rebirth Energy, allowing the android to power up while Tails continues studying it.

As the distortions spread beyond Green Hill into Lost Valley and other parts of the world, the Master Emerald shatters again. Knuckles and the player destroy Eggman’s forces, recover the shards, and remain alert for Hologram Metal Sonic. Knuckles also discovers keyholes around the pyramid and sends the player to locate keys. After doing so, Metal Sonic is defeated.

In the snowy mountains, Espio reflects with regret, believing he failed to warn Sonic in time. Soon after, Green Hill’s mountains begin to rise into a dark sky. Tails attempts to activate Android Shadow using the collected Rebirth Energy, but Eggman interrupts and uses his rebirth beam on the powered-up android despite Tails’ warning. The result causes everything to go dark.

Reborn

After the explosion, the player wakes in a changed world and reunites with Tails. Tails believes the explosion may have caused the world itself to rebirth. While exploring, he notices the presence of Red Star Rings and later manages to repair Android Shadow. He sends the player toward Lost Valley to meet Knuckles, suggesting that Sonic should be able to help them reach it.

In Lost Valley, the player finds a large pyramid and reunites with Knuckles, who explains that the Master Emerald has been broken again and that Metal Sonic may be searching for its shards. Together, they collect the shards, destroy Eggman’s Badniks, and discover runes matching those around the pyramid.

The player also finds Rouge nearby. She reveals that Eggman has kept Shadow trapped for some time and asks the player to destroy Eggman’s generators to open the pyramid entrance. After a key is found from a Badnik, the player enters the pyramid and frees Shadow. Shadow thanks the player and says they should defeat Eggman at all costs.

In Emerald Hill, the player meets Tails again and encounters Omega, who identifies Eggman as a shared enemy. Omega joins the player in fighting Eggman’s forces, and the team challenges and defeats Eggman.

The team then travels to New Yoke City, a city overrun by Eggman drones and statues resembling him. Rebel Rouge asks the player to defeat Chaos Council drones and protect key areas of the city. With the player’s help, New Yoke is defended and enough parts are recovered to push back the enemy forces.

Characters[edit]

Sonic Speed Simulator features playable characters, non-playable characters, enemies, and UGC-exclusive characters drawn from across the Sonic the Hedgehog series, along with crossover and event-related appearances. Playable characters are obtained through Main Quests, persistent and limited-time events, codes, shops, Golden Eggs, the Fast Pass, the Codex, and other reward systems. Many characters also appear in alternate outfits or themed variants based on other Sonic games, comics, animation, Sonic Channel artwork, seasonal events, and collaborations.

Worlds[edit]

Sonic Speed Simulator is structured around a large number of explorable worlds, race areas, boss arenas, secret zones, and event spaces. These environments are based on locations from across the Sonic the Hedgehog series, while some were created specifically for the game or adapted from other media such as Sonic Prime, IDW comics, and collaboration events. Over the course of the game’s updates, its world progression changed significantly, especially after the Reborn overhaul, which reworked map layouts, unlock requirements, and overall progression.

Main worlds

The main world lineup has expanded over time, with worlds typically unlocked through rebirth milestones, quests, or later progression systems tied to Gate Keys and Main Quests.

  1. Green Hill (unlocked at start)
  2. Lost Valley (Rebirth 1)
  3. Emerald Hill (Rebirth 2)
  4. City Escape (Rebirth 3)
  5. Hill Top (Rebirth 4)
  6. Speed Jungle (Rebirth 5)
  7. No Place (Rebirth 6)
  8. Cyber Station (Rebirth 10)
  9. Metal City Skatepark (Rebirth 14)
  10. New Yoke City (Rebirth 18)
  11. Space Colony Ark (Rebirth 22)
  12. Radical Highway (Rebirth 26)
  13. Pumpkin Hill (Rebirth 30)
  14. Autumn Forest (Rebirth 34)
  15. Metro City (Rebirth 38)
  16. Cool Edge (Rebirth 42)

Additional hub-style or utility areas connected to the main progression include:

  • Race World
  • Trading Hub

Secret worlds

The game also contains several hidden or bonus worlds, many of which are unlocked much later in progression or through secret portals. Some of these worlds are returns to older layouts, while others were introduced through special events.

  1. Lost Valley Classic (Rebirth 52)
  2. Emerald Hill Classic (Rebirth 63)
  3. Hill Top Classic (Rebirth 85)
  4. Chemical Plant Classic (Rebirth 96)
  5. Snow Valley (Rebirth 109)
  6. Green Reef (Rebirth 200)
  7. Diamond Terminal (Rebirth 500)
  8. Radical Highway (Doom Zone)
  9. Synth City Obby
  10. Chemical Plant*
  11. Green Hill Classic* (Part of Chronos Silver: Timefall Event)

Legacy

Before the Reborn overhaul, the game’s original structure used a different world lineup and alternate unlock requirements. In this legacy format, worlds were often unlocked by finishing obbies or meeting race requirements instead of the later rebirth-based progression.

  1. Green Hill (unlocked at start)
  2. Lost Valley (unlocked by completing the Lost Valley Obby)
  3. Emerald Hill (unlocked by completing the Emerald Hill Obby)
  4. Snow Valley (unlocked by completing the Snow Valley Obby)
  5. Hill Top (unlocked by completing the Hill Top Obby)
  6. Chemical Plant (unlocked by completing at least 25 races)

Races

Races are a major part of the game’s structure and have appeared in several different formats across legacy and post-Reborn versions.

Legacy races

These races were part of the game’s earlier structure, before the later world and race reworks.

  • Green Hill Race (reworked into Green Hill Drag Race)
  • Lost Valley Race
  • Emerald Hill Race
  • Snow Valley Race (originally designed as Hill Top Obby)
  • Hill Top Race
  • Metal Madness Race (singleplayer race against Metal Sonic, Stardust Speedway)
  • Metal City Race (singleplayer race against Jet the Hawk)

Action Races (Reborn)

Action Races were added as part of the newer structure and are usually more setpiece-driven than the earlier race format.

  • City Escape Race
  • Emerald Coast Race
  • Green Hill Race
  • Metal City Race
  • Metal Harbour Race
  • Metal Madness Race (Stardust Speedway)
    • Metal Madness Race Hard (used during Metal Sonic’s Revenge Event)
  • TMNT Race (limited time collaboration)

Drag Races (Reborn)

Drag Races are shorter head-to-head or time-based challenges spread across multiple worlds.

  • Autumn Forest Drag Race
  • City Escape Drag Race
  • Emerald Hill Drag Race
  • Green Hill Drag Race
  • Hill Top Drag Race
  • Lost Valley Drag Race
  • Metal Madness Drag Race
  • Mirage Saloon Drag Race
  • New Yoke City Drag Race
  • No Place Drag Race
  • Radical Highway Drag Race
  • Speed Jungle Drag Race

Boss fights (Reborn)

Boss battles became a more prominent feature in later versions of the game, especially after Reborn. These encounters pit the player, or multiple players, against major enemies from across the franchise.

  • Dr. Eggman (Emerald Hill)
  • Emerald Hill Boss Fight Hard
  • Neo Metal Sonic
    • Super Neo Metal Sonic
  • Infinite (Null Space)
  • Time Eater (Temporal Rift)
  • Mecha Sonic Mark 2
  • Colosseum
  • Fang the Hunter (Mirage Saloon)

Obbies (Legacy)

Obstacle courses, referred to in-game as obbies, were a major part of the original structure and were often tied to unlocking new areas.

  • Green Hill Obby 1
  • Green Hill Obby 2
  • Green Hill Obby 3
  • Lost Valley Obby
  • Emerald Hill Obby
  • Emerald Hill Obby 1
  • Snow Valley Obby
  • Hill Top Obby
  • Synth City Obby

Tag Arenas

Tag-based multiplayer arenas were later introduced as their own activity type.

  • Green Hill Cyberspace
  • New Yoke Tag Arena
  • Touchdown Tag

Extra

In addition to the main worlds and structured challenge spaces, the game includes several extra maps and event areas, some of which are temporary or inaccessible.

  • World Premiere (Sonic Prime premiere viewing area)
  • Somewhere Else (April Fools event)
  • Green Hill Act 1 (tutorial)
  • Brick Hill Zone (limited-time collaboration with LEGO)
  • Green Port Island

Development[edit]

Sonic Speed Simulator was developed by Gamefam Studios, a Roblox game development group based in Los Angeles. According to producer Brendan O’Brien, the game was put together in roughly three months prior to release.[6]SHADOWTHEHEDGEHOGXX. Twitter. 16 April 2022. accessed 17. SHADOWTHEHEDGEHOGXX: I want to thank @gamefamstudios and our amazing team for putting this all together in just 3 MONTHS! This is only the beginning! There's so much more to come!” The project itself was also assembled in a very short span, with one source noting that the game page listed its creation date as 9 March 2022. DigitalPurgatory and CKDEV, both from the team behind the Sonic Onset Adventure fangame, were brought in to assist with development, though both later left the project in October 2022.

The game originated from a pitch by Joe Ferencz, Gamefam’s chief executive officer, to Ivo Gerscovich, Sega’s chief brand officer for Sonic the Hedgehog. Ferencz wanted to develop an official Roblox game based on a major video game property, while Sega was looking for ways to strengthen Sonic’s appeal with younger audiences. That overlap led to the decision to bring the franchise to Roblox as an official licensed title.[7]How Gamefam's Founder Taps His Inner Child to Bring Brands to the Metaverse. Inc.. October 25, 2024. accessed April 17, 2026

As development continued, Gamefam expanded the team with creators already known in the Sonic fan community. On 17 May 2022, Gamefam announced that Nibroc.Rock had joined the team to help further develop 3D models for the game.[8]Gamefam Studios (@gamefamstudios) on Twitter. Twitter. 16 May 2022. accessed 17. archived 17 May 2022. Archived version. Gamefam Studios: We're excited to finally announce that the legendary @NibrocRock has joined the Gamefam team! Many of you may know him from the greater Sonic community, and we can't be happier to have him on board to help us further develop Sonic Speed Simulator! Welcome, Nibroc to the team!” Another source describes him as a well-known Sonic fan recognized for his fan-made renders and his involvement in the fangame Sonic World, and identifies him as the project’s lead developer. Later, in May 2023, Strike joined the team. Known for his work on the fangames Sonic Runners Deluxe and Sonic World DX, he took on work involving animations and character models.

Release and promotional history[edit]

Sonic Speed Simulator was first made available on Roblox as a paid closed beta, with access costing 50 Robux. The uploaded sources differ slightly on the exact start of that beta, with one giving 30 March 2022 and another describing it as being announced and released in closed beta on 13 April 2022, but they agree that the game received its full free public release on 16 April 2022. Players who joined the paid beta received a free Knuckles Chao pet.

After launch, the game followed a frequent update cycle. One source states that updates were released every Sunday, while another says the game is actively updated every Friday, with larger updates on Saturdays and some special releases tied to player milestones such as like goals. Because the sources do not fully match on the weekly schedule, it is safest to say that the game adopted a rapid and regular live-service update pattern shortly after release.

Promotion for the game extended beyond Roblox itself. According to one source, some updates were advertised directly on the Roblox website, while the game was also promoted through Sonic Official livestreams and Sonic Central presentations. During Sonic Central 2022, held on 7 June 2022, Gamefam and Sega announced that a Chemical Plant Zone area would be added on 11 June, and an Amy Chao code was revealed the same day.

One of the game’s most notable promotional tie-ins came later that year with Sonic Prime. From 10 December to 16 December 2022, players could attend a special early screening of the first episode before its initial Netflix debut. To support the event, Gamefam, Sega, Netflix, WildBrain Studios, and Roblox Corporation partnered on a promotion that allowed players to earn Nine’s Mechanical Arms as a virtual UGC accessory.

Promotional events

Sonic Speed Simulator has been used for several promotional tie-ins tied to other Sonic media, Roblox-wide campaigns, and multi-game collaborations. Its most notable early promotion was the Sonic Prime event held from 10 December to 16 December 2022, during which players could attend a special early screening of the first episode of the series before its debut on Netflix. The promotion was organized through a partnership involving Gamefam, Sega, Netflix, WildBrain Studios, and Roblox Corporation, and rewarded players with Nine’s Mechanical Arms as a virtual UGC accessory.[9]Marc Deschamps. December 7, 2022[11]Lu-Hai Liang. Roblox Gets First Episode Premiere Of Netflix's Sonic Prime. The Gamer. December 6, 2022 The game also included the World Premiere area, which served as the in-game venue for that screening.

The Sonic Prime promotion extended beyond Sonic Speed Simulator itself through connected badge events in other Roblox experiences. These included badges in Weapon Fighting Simulator, Starving Artists, and Funky Friday, the last of which awarded an exclusive “Popcorn Chao” plushie for completing a Sonic Prime event song. Sonic Speed Simulator itself also featured a dedicated Sonic Prime Premiere badge tied to watching the credits of “Shattered” during the World Premiere event.

The game has also participated in wider Roblox event campaigns. One example was RB Battles Season 3, where players could earn the “Sonic’s RB Battles Challenge” badge by completing the RB Battles obby in Sonic Speed Simulator. Another was The Hunt: First Edition, which included a badge for completing the Hunt quest in the game. Later Roblox-wide campaigns included The Games, which distributed several event badges, and Winter Spotlight, which awarded Standard and Elite Tokens tied to ring collection and holiday present delivery.

Several later promotions tied the game to outside Sonic or crossover releases. A limited-time Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collaboration awarded a Tales of TMNT badge and connected the game to the then-upcoming television series. Another cross-game promotion tied to Sonic X Shadow Generations allowed players to unlock the Doom’s Eye Fast Friend item by completing quests across both Sonic Speed Simulator and Really Easy Obby. Additional promotional badges were also distributed through other Roblox games for “Sonic World” events.

Reborn update and data wipe[edit]

On 10 February 2023, ‘Sonic Speed Simulator received a major overhaul that renamed the game Sonic Speed Simulator Reborn. According to the supplied sources, this update dramatically reworked the game, changing the scale of its maps, its rebirth progression, its pet systems, and several other core features.

The update was also accompanied by a full data wipe. All player progress was reset, and returning players lost their existing advancement when they started the new version after being shown an opening cutscene. Later, the in-game title reverted back to Sonic Speed Simulator, and the Reborn name was removed from the game itself, though one source notes that it continued to appear in Sonic Official livestreams.

The gameplay structure changed substantially after the reset. Before Reborn, progression centered on a capped level system in which players explored six zones, collected Chaos Orbs, leveled up Speed and Power, and rebirthed at the level cap to raise that cap further while earning permanent bonuses. Earlier versions also included activities such as races, obbies, and the Tornado flight segment.

After Reborn, the game shifted to a new structure built around three main zones at launch and a less restrictive level system. Player level was no longer capped in the same way, and rebirths instead awarded Rebirth Tokens based on the player’s level at the time of rebirth. These tokens could be spent on permanent multipliers for XP, Rings, and damage. Pets were also heavily reworked, no longer leveling through collected XP and instead being upgraded with Rings and Red Star Rings, with their level cap reduced to 25 instead of 99. The update also removed several older activities from the pre-Reborn version, including races and the Tornado flight mode as they had existed before the overhaul.

In story terms, the Reborn change was reflected through the game’s narrative as well. The quest storyline frames the transition as the result of Eggman using a rebirth beam on a powered-up Android Shadow, after which everything goes dark and the player awakens in a changed world. Tails then explains that the explosion may have caused the world itself to rebirth.

Soundtrack[edit]

Rather than featuring a wholly original soundtrack, Sonic Speed Simulator primarily makes use of music drawn from previous entries in the Sonic series. Over time, the selection expanded significantly as new worlds, races, boss fights, and event areas were added.

Badges[edit]

On 7 May 2022, several badges were added to Sonic Speed Simulator. Badges continued to be introduced periodically until the 31 August 2024 update, which added new badge designs alongside many additional entries. A badge menu was later added in-game during the 14 September 2024 update, and players who collected at least 90% of the available badges could unlock the “Elite Sonic” skin.

Reception[edit]

Alan Wen of Eurogamer gave Sonic Speed Simulator a positive review, praising its 3D open-world gameplay and describing it as “probably the most polished experience to have graced Roblox so far”. At the same time, he criticized its progression system, obstacle courses, and race minigames, arguing that the progression could feel unsatisfying and that the races were too basic and prone to lag.[12]Alan Wen. Controversy[edit]

Further information: Gamefam – Accusations of employee mistreatment

Sonic Speed Simulator became the subject of controversy in December 2022 for both a promotional crossover dispute and allegations concerning working conditions at Gamefam.

Following the addition of Sonic Prime promotional content to Funky Friday, an unofficial Roblox recreation of Friday Night Funkin, ninjamuffin99, the original developer and co-creator of Friday Night Funkin, publicly voiced displeasure over the partnership and stated that he was seeking legal guidance on the matter.[13]https://web.archive.org/web/20221211163128/https://twitter.com/ninja_muffin99/status/1601825668496515073[14]https://web.archive.org/web/20221212233150/https://twitter.com/ninja_muffin99/status/1601711928287858688

A larger controversy soon followed when former Gamefam staff and contributors began raising concerns about the production of Sonic Speed Simulator. In December 2022, Digital Purgatory, a former Gamefam employee and modeler for several characters in the game, including Classic Sonic and Sonic the Werehog, published a statement describing underpayment, crunch caused by the game’s rapid update schedule, and termination without the contractually required notice period.[15]https://web.archive.org/web/20221212151505/http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1ss6qk7 Other former employees also raised allegations online regarding crunch, underpayment, and layoffs before the holiday season, prompting some fans to circulate the hashtag #SonicSweatshopSimulator on Twitter.[16]Rhiannon Bevan. Sonic Speed Simulator Devs Accused Of Crunching And Underpaying Staff. The Gamer. December 12, 2022

According to one source, Gamefam also began banning users from the game’s Discord server for mentioning the issue.[16]Rhiannon Bevan. Sonic Speed Simulator Devs Accused Of Crunching And Underpaying Staff. The Gamer. December 12, 2022 In response to the allegations, Gamefam Studios published a public statement on 12 December 2022 denying the claims made against the company.[17]https://web.archive.org/web/20221212212154/https://twitter.com/gamefamstudios/status/1602392991838109704[18]More Developers Speak Out Against Roblox Sonic Speed Simulator Developer Gamefam. The Gamer. December 13, 2022. accessed April 17, 2026

On 10 April 2023, additional allegations were shared by an unofficial news account for the game and a former Gamefam developer, who claimed that the company did not allow employees to discuss pay and threatened them with termination for doing so.[19]http://web.archive.org/web/20230412204716/https://twitter.com/ArtemisTD_PR/status/1645787942835847170

    • Holiday Cheer Sonic, Winter Cream, Holiday Cheer Blaze, Holiday Cheer Silver, and Winter Shadow are all based on Sonic Channel artwork.
    • During the “Pixel Hunt” event, Amy was given a trick animation that references artwork created by Sonic Channel for Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity‘s 14th anniversary.
    • Easter Sonic is based on Lunar New Year artwork from Sonic Channel in 2023.
    • The glasses on the updated Riders Amy skin from the “Stormy Feathers” event are based on the glasses she wore on the retailer incentive cover of Sonic the Hedgehog #69.
    • Popstar Amy is based on her outfit of the same name from Sonic Forces: Speed Battle and Sonic Dash.
      • Reaper Metal Sonic and Chronos Silver also originate from those games.
    • Rockstar Shadow’s outfit is based on his outfit from Sonic Channel’s Otherworld Comedy.
    • Vampire Silver is based on Silver’s October 2016 artwork from Sonic Channel.
    • DJ Vector and Rockstar Rouge’s outfits both originate from Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.
    • Summer Amy’s outfit originates from Sonic X.
      • Summer Sonic wears the bracelet Amy gave Sonic in “The Last Resort“, a shirt matching one from an old Joypolis plush, glasses matching the ending screen of Sonic’s story in Sonic Adventure, and the Light Speed Shoes from the same game.
      • Summer Cream’s outfit also originates from Sonic X.
    • Summer Blaze is based on the outfit she wears on the A cover of the Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2022, created by Yui Karasuno from Sonic Channel.
      • She also wears the bracelet given to her by Cream from that same cover.
    • The Summer variants of the Babylon Rogues are based on their outfits from Sonic the Hedgehog: Endless Summer.
      • Jet’s outfit originates from his August 2013 calendar artwork from Sonic Channel.
      • Wave and Storm’s outfits are based on their ‘Tidal Wave’ and ‘Tropical Storm’ variants from Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.
    • Racesuit Omega and Gold Style Silver are both based on versions of their cars from Team Sonic Racing.
      • Omega’s is based on concept artwork of the Cross Dozer, achievable in-game through Performance Parts.
      • Silver’s is based on the golden versions of the Lightron, unlocked through Performance Parts.
    • Mummy Espio, Ninja Espio, Flame Shadow, Racesuit Silver, and Circuit Metal Sonic are all based on outfits from Sonic Rivals 2.
      • While Sonic receives the Zebra outfit in this game, the Zebra and Cheetah outfits used for Zebra Sonic and Cheetah Shadow are based on Sonic and Tails’ matching Cheetah Sonic and Zebra Tails outfits from Sonic Rivals 2.
    • The SIM skins unlocked through Codex completion are based on the AI Racer skins from Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
  • The sound of a player’s jump, Homing Attack, and Spin Dash depends on the era a character is from:
    • Classic characters use sound effects based on the classic games, including the iconic jump sound. Springs also use the classic spring sound effect.
    • Adventure-style characters, along with Shadow and his variants, use sound effects taken from the Adventure games.
    • Characters introduced in the modern era, such as Blaze, Silver, and modern versions of the main cast, use the current sound effect set, as do most newer characters and reskins.
  • During the “Summer” event, the tables under the tent feature cans of Chaos Cola and Chaos Soda. The tables outside the tent are also the same ones from the ending screen of Sonic Adventure.
  • During the “Enchanting” update, Metal Sonic could be seen floating above the tent.
  • During the “Birthday Bash Event!”, a secret message under the bridge in Green Hill read “Santiago is GONE…” This is a reference to the fan joke that the Classic Sonic from Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces is not the same character as the Classic Sonic from the Sega Mega Drive games, but instead a villainous character named “Santiago”. Beneath it was a picture of glasses resembling those worn by Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The message was later removed.
  • On the side of the Chemical Plant portal in Green Hill, there was a piece of artwork of Dr. Eggman from Sonic Colors. The same image also appeared elsewhere around the area before later being removed.
  • The icon for the “Fly Event” is based on the first poster for the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film.
  • The sphere that Froggy and Pocky are in when equipped is inspired by the spheres surrounding animals in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2.
  • Classic Tails being frozen in time during the “Save Classic Tails” event is a reference to characters being frozen in time in Sonic Generations.
  • Lost Valley was originally named Sandy Hill.
  • In Metal City Skatepark, if the player is fast enough to reach the top of the giant Riders Tower, Froggy can be found there.
  • On the bottom of Summer Sonic’s shoes, it says “Sonic Adventure” in cursive.
  • In Legacy, several golden Sonic statues could be found throughout the game, including in Green Hill, Pumpkin Hill, Green Hill Race, and Emerald Hill Race. The Green Hill statue was later moved to the center of the spawn area in Sonic Speed Simulator: Reborn.
  • Android Shadow’s pose on the artwork for his event is based on a pose from a piece of Shadow Android fan artwork by DeviantArt user “ShadowLifeman”.[20]Android Shadow (Yellow) - Shadow the Hedgehog by ShadowLifeman on Deviantart. DeviantArt. accessed 17
  • Johnny is the first character to feature a Speed stat.
  • Two of Grind Shoe Sonic’s idle animations are references to Sonic’s idle animations from Sonic Adventure 2.
  • One of Shadow’s idle animations, where he realigns his spines while lowering his head slightly, recreates one of his idle animations from Sonic Heroes.
  • Tails’ idle animation is based on one of his idle animations from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
  • Racesuit Sonic and Racesuit Shadow’s artwork and idle animations reference the box artwork for Sonic Adventure 2.
  • Blaze has an idle animation similar to one she had in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), although it is extended here. She also does not use the traditional Spin Jump or Spin Dash, instead using movements based on the Axel Jump and Spinning Claw. Blaze’s charging animation for the Spinning Claw appears identical to the one used for her Burst Dash in Sonic Rush.
  • Several of Silver’s animations and stances reference previous games and media:
    • His spawn-in pose is based on his render from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
    • His idle stance, normal run, fall, and boost animations are all based on animations from his debut game.
      • The boost animation is based on the animation used for the Teleport Dash.
      • His normal run animation is based on the clenched-fist jog he uses there.
    • The idle animation of Silver adjusting his gloves is based on one seen across several games, including Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. In Sonic Speed Simulator, it most closely resembles the Sonic Generations version.
  • During his story quest, one of Silver’s lines is “We don’t have the luxury of time”, which may allude to his Sonic Forces line “Despair is a luxury we don’t have.” Likewise, Silver telling the player to never give up may reference his line “I’ll never give up, let’s go!” from End of the World in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
  • The first icon used for the “Super Sonic” event directly references the Super Sonic transformation sequence from Sonic Rush. Super Sonic also has an idle animation where he crosses his arms over his chest, similar to both his stance before fighting Giganto and Super Sonic 2‘s Grand Slam animation from Sonic Frontiers, while another idle animation references one from Sonic Mania.
  • Super Sonic also has the unique ability to fly while boosting. This is also true of other “Super” types in the game, such as Neo Metal Sonic and ESP Silver. He is also the first “Super” rarity character in the game, and is immune to knockback from low-level Badniks, which he can destroy simply by running into them, similar to hoverboards.
  • Super Sonic, Neo Metal Sonic, the Roblox avatar while wearing Series Knuckles‘ hat, and ESP Silver can parry attacks from enemies.
  • When unlocking Super Sonic, he tells the player, “It’s time to take out the trash… SUPER SONIC STYLE!” This references his line, “It’s time to scramble some Eggmen… SUPER SONIC STYLE!” from Sonic Generations.
  • This is the first game in which the player can actually fight Neo Metal Sonic, since only his Metal Madness form is fought in Sonic Heroes. It is also only the second Sonic game where Neo Metal Sonic is actively featured, having otherwise only been mentioned or cameoed in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Frontiers outside his debut.
  • Blaze and Silver are the first characters who did not appear in Sonic Adventure 2 to both receive a Fast Friend and a Chao based on them. The Blaze Chao and Toy Robot Silver were released at the same time.
  • In the race shop display podium, Racesuit Silver used Rouge‘s idle animations for the first week after his addition. This was fixed in the following update. Because Silver does not have wings, his back quills appeared to flap instead.
  • Racesuit Blaze’s original outfit did not match her race shop render, instead featuring a two-piece racing outfit with her name embroidered on the front. This was later corrected.
  • Despite the event title “Steampunk Hedgehogs”, Sonic was the only hedgehog featured in the event, since Knuckles is an echidna. It is unknown whether this was a mistake or related to the later addition of Clockwork Shadow.
  • When asked about possible similarities between Royal King Shadow and King Shadow from the Archie Comics series, one of the lead designers for the game, Strike, denied any intentional connection, citing both legal issues and creative design choices. He also indicated that Archie comic characters and designs were unlikely to be used for similar reasons.
  • ESP Silver’s spawn-in pose is based on his concept artwork, and his parry animation appears to reuse part of the release animation for the Grab All ability. Summer Silver also features the PK mark on his shirt, which had last appeared in his debut game in 2006.
  • ESP Silver’s event directly mentions the War to Take Back the Planet, and his story implies that he comes from the Solaris incident timeline, as he did in Sonic Runners.
  • If a player wins a character they already own from the Spin Wheel, the chat will still announce that the character was unlocked, even though the actual reward is a replacement prize of XP, Rings, and Race Ticket boosts.
  • The banner shown when a challenger appears in a race blocks interaction with UI elements beneath it until it disappears.
  • Racesuit Metal Sonic’s design bears some resemblance to Neo Metal Sonic.
  • If a player’s Race Ticket Boost expires before the tickets are received, it does not take effect, even if it was still active when the race ended.
  • When the pop-up text about magnets in Auto-Run mode is clicked, it briefly changes to different text as it disappears: “Did you see this at runtime ? WHY !? I was shure you would not !
  • This is the first time Neo Metal Sonic, Gemerl, and Marine the Raccoon have been playable characters in a Sonic game. It also marks Fang‘s first playable appearance since Sonic the Fighters, Marine‘s first appearance in a Sonic game in 17 years since Sonic Rush Adventure, and Johnny‘s first playable appearance and first physical appearance since Sonic Rush Adventure, excluding Sonic Blitz.
  • Super Neo Metal Sonic is the first transformation originating in the IDW Sonic comic series to appear in the games. This also marks the first time IDW-exclusive transformations have appeared in a Sonic game, with Super Neo Metal Sonic and the Phantom Rider, though only the Phantom Rider is a playable skin. Likewise, Autumn Forest Zone marks the first time a location from the comics has appeared in a Sonic game.
  • While every other Surf Hoverboard has stars around the featured character’s name, Espio‘s are replaced with Shuriken stars.
  • Moonstones exist in Green Hill, Emerald Hill, City Escape, and Cool Edge, allowing the player to switch instantly between day and night by interacting with them.
  • Mirage Saloon Drag Race contains wanted posters for Bark, Bean, Fang, and a portrait of Heavy King.
  • In the Touchdown Tag lobby, a trophy case contains photos of the developers and testers, alongside teaser screenshots.
  • Metro City uses an in-universe language based on the symbols from Sonic Forces. The signage can be decoded into English by substituting the symbols with letters, revealing references to various characters, locations, and developers.
  • Through the end of 2025 and beginning of 2026, a series of events starring Silver caused classic worlds from before the Reborn data wipe to return for all players, fractured across time due to the Time Eater. During this period, Chemical Plant Classic became playable for the first time as a beta layout of Chemical Plant that had previously only been teased during Sonic Central in June 2022.
  • A piece of Sonic Channel artwork released for January 2026 depicted the version of Metro City seen in Sonic Speed Simulator, including a poster of a large Chao hologram and another poster taken directly from the game. A few weeks later, the game was updated to make part of the map snowy and to recreate that exact area from the artwork.
