Sonic the Hedgehog’s annual licensing revenue has surpassed ¥10 billion, according to SEGA Sammy’s newly published Integrated Report 2026, showing just how much the blue blur’s business has grown beyond video games.
The report, released on November 2, includes a chart tracking Sonic’s licensing revenue from the fiscal year ended March 2021 through March 2026. After several years of steady growth, the latest bar has climbed above the ¥10 billion mark. SEGA hasn’t provided an exact total, but it’s a significant milestone for the franchise.

The chart highlights several major releases along the way, including the three Sonic the Hedgehog movies, Sonic Frontiers and Sonic X Shadow Generations. SEGA has repeatedly credited the success of Sonic’s movies with helping expand the brand’s reach, generating more opportunities for merchandise, partnerships and character licensing.

The figure represents licensing revenue recorded by SEGA, rather than the total retail value of Sonic merchandise or the box-office earnings of the movies themselves.
And Sonic’s success is helping SEGA expand other franchises, too.
Across the company’s wider licensing business, revenue reached ¥17.9 billion during the fiscal year ended March 2026, up from ¥13.7 billion the previous year. The number of licensees generating revenue also increased from 627 to 748.
Those figures cover SEGA’s broader licensing business, not Sonic alone. The company also specifically excludes allocated Sonic movie revenue from its overall licensing figures.
SEGA now wants to use the relationships established through Sonic to grow licensing opportunities for Persona, Like a Dragon and Angry Birds, while expanding further into Japan and other Asian markets.
The company is forecasting ¥20.8 billion in overall licensing revenue for the fiscal year ending March 2027. That’s a company-wide target rather than a forecast for Sonic individually.
As Sonic City previously reported, SEGA expects the bigger licensing push surrounding Sonic’s 35th anniversary and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie to contribute to growth during the second half of the current fiscal year.
With the fourth movie scheduled for March 19, 2027, and Sonic continuing to appear in everything from clothing and collectibles to major brand collaborations, SEGA has plenty more planned for a character whose business now stretches far beyond the games that started it all.
