SEGA is considering bringing SONIC & FRIENDS to more languages, with English, Spanish and Chinese-language expansions among the ideas being discussed. The company is also looking to take its Sonic-themed children’s dance activities beyond Japan.

The plans were discussed in a new SEGAWAY behind-the-scenes feature published on October 15, which brings together comments from Sonic Creative Director Kazuyuki Hoshino, Sonic Sound Director Tomoya Ohtani and several of the creators responsible for the SONIC & FRIENDS theme song and music video.

The song, “SONIC & FRIENDS Theme (feat. Rejekun),” was released back in March, but SEGA has now shared some interesting details about how it came together.

According to Ohtani, work began around April 2025, when Hoshino approached SEGA’s sound department about creating a theme song for the animated series. Since producing a theme for a project outside the company’s games was relatively unusual, the team decided to hold an internal competition.

Three composers, including Ohtani himself, submitted separate demos, with the winning composition becoming the song fans know today. The selected track was composed and arranged by Tae Fujimoto, who had already been working on background music for the series’ TikTok shorts.

Fujimoto wanted the music to capture the playful atmosphere of SONIC & FRIENDS, incorporating cartoon sound effects and enthusiastic shouts of “Yeah” and “Wow.” She also suggested including a section where listeners could call out the characters’ names, making the song easier for children to sing and dance along to.

The recording brought together four elementary-school children as lead vocalists, while live instruments, including ukulele and saxophone, were recorded at SEGA’s own sound department studio.

Hoshino and SEGA planner Risa Abe wrote the lyrics, with Abe explaining that they wanted to preserve a little of Sonic’s trademark coolness beneath the characters’ cuter appearances. That idea influenced the song’s playful rap section, where the miniature Sonic characters try to act more grown-up before returning to their usual carefree antics.

Hoshino also took a hands-on role in the music video, creating its storyboards and overseeing its structure and direction. Japanese YouTuber Rejekun joined the production as a featured performer, alongside members of the professional dance team SEGA SAMMY LUX.

The choreography was developed by SEGA SAMMY LUX members KENTARO and MAAAO, who worked to make the routine approachable for younger audiences while incorporating recognizable poses for the different Sonic characters.

SEGA has now confirmed that two separate versions of the choreography were created, one for live events and another specifically for TikTok.

The song and dance were showcased at SHINAGAWA BLOOM & BEATS on April 5, 2026, where children joined the performers onstage at Shinagawa Intercity.

Fans can also follow the routine through SEGA’s dedicated choreography video.

Looking ahead, Hoshino says the team is considering English, Spanish and Chinese-language expansions as SONIC & FRIENDS continues reaching audiences around the world. These remain ideas under consideration, with no release dates or specific localized projects announced.

Yoshitsugu Natsume, who helped organize the SHINAGAWA BLOOM & BEATS stage event, also revealed that SEGA has established a children’s dance program built around Sonic. The company intends to expand the program both within Japan and internationally, introducing the franchise to younger audiences through music and dancing.

The plans are another step in the continued growth of SONIC & FRIENDS, which began as a TikTok animated series in August 2023 and has since expanded into merchandise, collaborations and events, including its recent third-anniversary celebrations.
