SONIC & FRIENDS is celebrating three years of being aggressively adorable, and SEGA has another collaboration lined up for the occasion.
SEGA has announced a new crossover between SONIC & FRIENDS and Kanahei’s Small Animals, the hugely popular character series created by Japanese illustrator Kanahei. The collaboration is part of SONIC & FRIENDS’ third-anniversary celebrations and comes with newly drawn crossover artwork featuring the Sonic cast rendered in Kanahei’s distinctive soft and charming style.
The collaboration arrives alongside a new series of SONIC & FRIENDS concept artwork created to mark the anniversary. SEGA describes the pieces as presenting a different side of the series, combining a more stylish direction with the cute character designs that have defined SONIC & FRIENDS since its launch in August 2023. The new artwork will continue appearing through the official website and social channels.
It follows the wider third-anniversary campaign already underway for SONIC & FRIENDS, which has included new artwork and a collaboration with Japanese idol group Kyururin tte Shitemite. The brand has also spent the past year expanding through character merchandise and major crossovers, including its ongoing collaboration with Sanrio Characters. Apparently three years old is already enough time to develop a pretty impressive social calendar.
The celebrations will move offline this autumn with the newly announced SONIC & FRIENDS 3rd Anniversary POP UP STORE, opening on the second floor of Shibuya MODI in Tokyo from October 2 through October 12, 2026. Merchandise featuring the third-anniversary illustrations will be sold at the event, although SEGA is keeping the actual product lineup under wraps for now.
There will also be a purchase-bonus campaign connecting the pop-up with SEGA STORE TOKYO, giving fans another reason to make the short trip between the two Shibuya locations. Details on the exclusive merchandise, bonus items and the conditions required to receive them will be announced later through the official SONIC & FRIENDS website and social accounts.
For anyone unfamiliar with Kanahei’s work, Kanahei’s Small Animals is best known for characters including Pisuke & Usagi, alongside a wider cast that has become particularly popular through LINE stickers, merchandise and numerous character collaborations in Japan and overseas. That makes the series a pretty natural match for SONIC & FRIENDS, which has similarly built much of its identity around simplified, expressive versions of Sonic and his cast.
SONIC & FRIENDS itself launched on TikTok in August 2023 as a short-form animated series starring Sonic, Amy, Tails, Knuckles and Dr. Eggman. Three years later, it has expanded well beyond those shorts into figures, plush, apparel, accessories and an increasingly long list of collaborations. Its Sanrio crossover alone has already grown to include fuzzy figures, mascots and other character goods.
The SONIC & FRIENDS 3rd Anniversary POP UP STORE will run from October 2 to October 12 at Shibuya MODI, with the full merchandise and purchase-bonus lineup still to come.
At this rate, SONIC & FRIENDS may need a bigger birthday cake.
