Sonic’s latest collaboration is asking fans to slow down for a few minutes and learn something important.

JADEC, the Japan Association for Diabetes Education and Care, and Taisho Pharmaceutical have teamed up with Sonic the Hedgehog for a new awareness campaign leading into World Diabetes Day on November 14. The initiative has launched under the title Learn About Diabetes Correctly With Sonic!, accompanied by a dedicated website packed with new Sonic artwork, educational material, a quiz and a photo contest.

The whole thing is, unsurprisingly, extremely blue.

That is not simply because Sonic happens to make a very convenient mascot here. Blue is the international symbol color for diabetes awareness, with the Blue Circle serving as the global symbol of the condition. The campaign turns that connection into its central visual theme, surrounding Sonic with blue Rings while asking visitors to look for the same color in the world around them. World Diabetes Day itself is marked every November 14 and was created by the International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization in 1991 before becoming an official United Nations day in 2006.

Sonic did not exactly have to make many adjustments to the color palette for this one.

The special site includes a “Understand Diabetes in 3 Minutes” section designed to introduce visitors to the subject through five basic questions. These cover what diabetes is, why it develops, what HbA1c means, what signs may be associated with the condition and the meaning behind the Blue Circle. Rather than turning Sonic into a tiny blue doctor, the campaign uses him as the familiar face guiding visitors toward the educational material.

There is also a wider language-awareness element behind the project. The site uses the Japanese transliteration “ダイアベティス”, or “diabetes,” while explaining the ongoing movement away from the traditional Japanese term 糖尿病 toward the internationally used name. JADEC has previously worked on campaigns intended to improve understanding of diabetes and reduce misconceptions and stigma surrounding the condition, including awareness video contests co-organized with Taisho Pharmaceutical.

The Sonic campaign makes that outreach considerably more interactive with the Diabetes Photo Contest 2026.

Its theme is simply “Blue Things Around You.” Fans are encouraged to find and photograph something blue in their everyday surroundings, tying their entry back to the color used for World Diabetes Day. The examples shown on the campaign site range from blue skies and sea life to jewelry and drinks, so apparently almost anything goes as long as Sonic would approve of the color.

The campaign page advertises three main prizes valued at ¥50,000, ¥30,000 and ¥20,000, while there is another particularly Sonic-specific reward for taking part. The official campaign account says 100 entrants will be selected by lottery to receive an original clear file featuring the collaboration artwork.

There is one small bit of homework before entering, though.

Visitors are directed through a three-question diabetes quiz, with all three questions needing to be answered correctly before proceeding to the photo contest application. It gives the campaign a nice bit of structure: learn a little about the subject first, then go hunting for something blue.

The collaboration arrives more than two months before World Diabetes Day on November 14, giving JADEC and Taisho Pharmaceutical plenty of time to use Sonic’s enormous reach to put the subject in front of people who might otherwise never go looking for diabetes information on their own. The campaign’s official social account launched its promotion today by encouraging followers to discover everyday examples of blue alongside Sonic.

It is certainly one of the more unexpected Sonic collaborations we have covered this year, but the logic behind the mascot choice is actually pretty hard to argue with.

Fast, recognizable, friendly and already the correct shade of blue.
