Three days ago, all seven Chaos Emeralds had finally been recovered and SEGA left us staring at a countdown while Club Chaos remained stubbornly behind the curtain.
Now the portal is open.
SEGA has fully revealed Club Chaos: A Sonic 35th Anniversary Celebration, a one-night event taking over Elsewhere at 599 Johnson Ave in Brooklyn, New York, on October 9. What the Chaos Hunt has been building toward turns out to be a pretty substantial anniversary party, combining live music, gaming, food, merchandise, character appearances, developer meet-and-greets and the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds World Championship Finals into an event spread across seven themed areas.
The main stage is headlined by Thundercat, joined by Austin Millz and Tee Lopes. Thundercat will give a musical performance, while Millz and Lopes are both billed for DJ sets. The former is a Grammy-winning bassist, singer and producer whose Sonic and Shadow obsession has become increasingly difficult to miss, particularly after his recent visit to SEGA carrying a custom Super Sonic bass. Lopes hardly needs an introduction to Sonic fans, with work spanning Sonic Mania, Sonic Superstars and, most recently, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
SEGA is also bringing the Sonic the Hedgehog Speed Café to New York City for the first time, complete with exclusive items created for the event. Elsewhere in Club Chaos, attendees will be able to explore a retro art and gaming lounge, a Chao Garden chill area, interactive fan spaces, exclusive Sonic merchandise, specialty Sonic-themed food and drinks, and additional surprises spread throughout the venue. Sonic, Tails and Shadow will appear for photo opportunities, while Takashi Iizuka, members of the CrossWorlds development team and Tee Lopes are scheduled for meet-and-greets.
Club Chaos itself opens its doors at 7:00 PM ET, with the main show beginning at 8:30 PM ET, but the Sonic festivities start considerably earlier. Ticket holders can RSVP for limited access to the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds World Championship Finals, which will take place as a pre-show event from 12:00 PM through 4:30 PM ET. Availability for the live viewing audience is limited and first come, first served.
For everyone who cannot casually teleport to Brooklyn, SEGA is making the entire celebration a global one. Club Chaos and the CrossWorlds championship will be livestreamed through Sonic’s official YouTube and Twitch channels, with Jacki Jing returning as host and MC after previously appearing during Sonic’s June 23 birthday livestream. That means the culmination of the Chaos Hunt will not be locked exclusively behind a physical event, even if some of the merchandise, food and venue experiences obviously will be.
Tickets go on sale Friday, August 28 at 1:00 PM ET, with Club Chaos restricted to guests 18 and older. The official site lists General Admission at $65, including entry and an exclusive Sonic 35th anniversary coin. The $150 Emerald Tier adds expedited entry, rooftop access, two drink tickets, an Emerald swag bag and the anniversary coin. Guests aged 21 and over can receive wristbands for alcoholic beverages.
This is the reveal Sonic City was waiting for when the Chaos Hunt concluded on August 22. At that point, SEGA had only confirmed that recovering all seven Emeralds would finally power Club Chaos, leaving virtually everything beyond the October 9 date hidden behind the campaign’s countdown. We now know what those Emeralds were charging: a full-day championship and anniversary event capped by live performances, seven immersive areas and one of the most elaborate physical Sonic celebrations SEGA has put together for the 35th anniversary.
The Chaos Hunt took fans through Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, New York and eventually cyberspace in pursuit of the full Emerald set. After all that running, the reward is apparently an underground Brooklyn party with Thundercat, chili dogs, Chao and a world championship.
Okay. Fair trade.
