Time to make some craaazy money.
UPDATE, AUGUST 26: Axel is officially available in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. SEGA has released the free content drop alongside a new character trailer, while also providing some additional details about what players can expect from this weekend’s Crazy Taxi Axel Festival.
SEGA has fully detailed the next free collaboration for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, with Axel from Crazy Taxi joining the roster on August 26 alongside his own machine, new music and a dedicated limited-time Festival. The update is free, although players will need an internet connection to claim the new content.
Axel was first announced for CrossWorlds back in June, when Sonic City covered SEGA’s roadmap of free guest racers following the arrival of Classic Sonic. At the time, all we knew was that Axel would arrive sometime in August with a machine inspired by Crazy Taxi, while Samba de Amigo’s Amigo would follow in September. The August 25 announcement finally filled in the rest of that schedule.
Axel races in the Devolada Yellow Jack, the Crazy Taxi-themed machine previously previewed alongside his original announcement. The free content drop also includes special Axel emotes and sounds, while two new tracks have been added to the game’s Jukebox: “Axel: Character Select” and “Axel: Result.” Both are character-specific themes rather than race music, with SEGA noting that neither can be selected as background music during races.
Players who own either the physical or digital Standard Edition or the Digital Deluxe Edition can receive the Axel content at no additional cost. SEGA says players should make sure CrossWorlds has been updated to its latest version for the content to download correctly.
The collaboration will then get its own Crazy Taxi Axel Festival, beginning August 27 at 8:00 PM ET and running through August 30 at 7:59 PM ET. We now know considerably more about how the event itself works: racers will be divided into three teams competing through online races for the highest combined placement score, with special Festival rules introducing additional objectives. SEGA specifically gives competing over the number of Touch Dashes performed as one example.
Earning Festival Points will unlock special items, including stickers and horns for machine customization, alongside Gadgets and other rewards. SEGA continues to note that Gadgets offered through the Festival may later be distributed through regular updates and that other Festival rewards could return through different means. The English announcement additionally warns that deleting your save data will delete Festival rewards and they cannot be re-earned from the completed event.
SEGA has also released a new Axel character trailer showing the Crazy Taxi veteran and the Devolada Yellow Jack in action. In Japan, Axel’s launch also coincides with a 60% discount on the Standard Edition of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds through the PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop, with SEGA listing the sale through September 9.
That makes Axel considerably more than another character quietly added to the roster. CrossWorlds has increasingly used its free guest racers as mini celebrations of SEGA history, pairing characters with their own machines, music and limited events. Captain Majima and Arle received similar treatment earlier this year, and Axel now gets to bring a little of Crazy Taxi’s particular brand of vehicular irresponsibility into the mix.
The timing is especially appropriate with SEGA actively reviving Crazy Taxi elsewhere, but for CrossWorlds players the immediate takeaway has now changed from anticipation to availability: Axel and the Devolada Yellow Jack are available now, with the Crazy Taxi Axel Festival beginning August 27.
After spending nearly two months waiting for him to pull up, Axel has finally arrived.
