Limited Run Games Shows First Production Sample of Revised Sonic X Shadow Generations Statue

At long last, the Sonic X Shadow Generations statue is moving again.

Limited Run Games has shared a new progress update on the revised statue for its Sonic X Shadow Generations Collector’s Edition, revealing that the project has now reached the production sample stage.

That might not sound quite as exciting as a finished statue landing on someone’s doorstep, but it is an important milestone.

Limited Run previously showed the 3D prototype that would serve as the basis for the new statue. That model received SEGA’s approval, allowing the manufacturer to begin preparing it for large-scale production.

And turning one prototype into thousands of consistent statues apparently involves slightly more work than pressing the big red “make more” button.

The manufacturing process has involved tooling, testing, adjustments, and other preparation necessary to reproduce the statue at scale. With that work now far enough along, the manufacturer has completed what Limited Run describes as its first suitable production sample.

For the moment, Limited Run has only received photographs of that sample rather than the physical piece itself.

The images place the older 3D prototype alongside the new production version, allowing the team to compare the two and check how closely the manufacturing process has reproduced the approved design.

So far, Limited Run likes what it sees.

According to the company, the production sample appears to match the prototype closely enough that it has cleared this initial review stage.

There is still another fairly important name that needs to sign off on it, though.

The manufacturer is expected to send the physical sample to Limited Run Games next, allowing the team to inspect it properly rather than relying solely on photographs. Assuming everything still looks right in person, the statue will then be passed along to SEGA for approval.

Only after those reviews are completed can the project continue toward its final production stages.

Limited Run says it expects that next part of the process to move relatively quickly and plans to provide another update as work continues.

Fans comparing the new photographs may also notice some damage to the older prototype. Limited Run says there is no reason to worry about that, as the original was a fragile 3D print that travelled between Limited Run, SEGA, and the manufacturer during development.

The actual production statue is being made to be considerably more durable.

The update comes as Limited Run continues working through its Sonic collector’s edition projects. Sonic City recently covered progress on the separate Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Collector’s Edition statue, which has likewise been moving through sample revisions and approval stages.

For Sonic X Shadow Generations, though, reaching a proper production sample means the redesigned statue is finally starting to make the transition from prototype to something that can actually be manufactured at scale.

It is not at the finish line yet.

But after a very long lap, seeing the production version next to the prototype is at least some very welcome movement.
