Sonic Channel has revealed its May 2026 release commemorative illustration, this time putting the spotlight on Honey from Sonic the Fighters!

The artwork celebrates the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Fighters, SEGA’s 1996 arcade fighting game that brought Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Espio, Fang, Bean, Bark, Metal Sonic, and Eggman into a one-on-one 3D fighting format. For this anniversary feature, Sonic Channel chose one of the game’s most unusual characters: Honey, a rarely playable fighter with a unique place in Sonic history.

Honey is best known as a hidden character tied to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Sonic the Fighters. While she did not appear as a standard playable character in the original arcade release, she existed in the game’s data and was later made officially playable in the HD re-release. That history has helped make her one of the more obscure and interesting characters connected to the classic Sonic roster.

Her origins also connect Sonic the Fighters to another SEGA fighting game. Honey is based on the character Honey, also known as Candy in some releases, from Fighting Vipers, the 1995 arcade fighter developed by SEGA AM2. Sonic the Fighters itself was built with a similar 3D fighting framework, making Honey’s presence a fitting nod to SEGA’s wider arcade fighting era.

In Sonic the Fighters, Honey appears as a fashionable cat with a bright, cheerful design that contrasts with her role as a fighter. Sonic Channel’s description plays into that contrast, warning fans not to be fooled by her cute appearance. Underestimating her could lead to an unexpected hit and a quick knockout.

Although Honey has rarely appeared across the wider Sonic series, her status as a hidden character has helped her maintain a small but dedicated following. For fans of Sonic the Fighters, her inclusion in Sonic Channel’s commemorative artwork is a fun deep cut that highlights one of the franchise’s more unusual crossover connections.

With Sonic the Fighters now reaching its 30th anniversary, Honey’s latest spotlight is a reminder of how many surprising corners Sonic history still has, from arcade experiments to hidden characters that only became fully playable years later.
