Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is finding new momentum on Netflix as Paramount and SEGA’s movie franchise prepares for its next big-screen chapter.
According to FlixPatrol, the 2022 sequel recently reached the number five spot on Netflix’s Top 10 movies chart in the United States. The film also climbed to number two among Netflix’s top kids films in the country, showing that the second Sonic movie is still drawing strong family interest several years after its theatrical debut.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has also appeared on streaming charts, with the 2024 film reaching eighth place on MGM+. Together, the two placements show continued interest in Paramount’s Sonic movie series as fans wait for Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 originally released in theaters in 2022 as the follow-up to the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The sequel brought back Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, while also giving Tails and Knuckles major roles in the live-action movie universe.
For longtime fans, the movie was especially notable for featuring Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails and Idris Elba as Knuckles. O’Shaughnessey had already voiced Tails across the games and other Sonic media, making her return for the films a major point of continuity for the character.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 became a major box office success, earning more than $405 million worldwide against a reported production budget of under $110 million. Its performance helped secure the future of the movie franchise, paving the way for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Knuckles streaming series, and the upcoming fourth film.
The franchise has only expanded since then. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduced Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog and ended with major teases for Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, both of whom are expected to play important roles in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
The next movie is currently scheduled to release in theaters on March 19, 2027. Production has already wrapped, with director Jeff Fowler previously sharing a behind-the-scenes image featuring a practical Metal Sonic stand-in. Voice recording has also started, with Ben Schwartz and Colleen O’Shaughnessey both sharing recent studio updates for Sonic and Tails.
With Sonic the Hedgehog 2 now performing strongly on Netflix and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continuing to draw attention on streaming, the movie franchise is staying visible between theatrical releases. For fans catching up or revisiting the series, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently available to stream on Netflix in the United States.
