However, this year’s event has a surprise twist, as Sonic the SEGA Corporation and Sanrio Co., Ltd. have teamed up to bring Sonic the Hedgehog and friends into the 2025 Sanrio Character Popularity Poll, adding a burst of Blue Blur energy to the event’s 40th-anniversary celebrations. An official crossover illustration of Sonic and Hello Kitty—drawn in the chibi style of the SONIC & FRIENDS short-anime series—has kicked off the collaboration, with more character reveals promised in the months ahead.
Sonic enters the poll’s Partner Category at No. 33, sporting an irresistibly cute Hello Kitty hat. He isn’t racing alone: Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, and Dr. Eggman will also appear in Sanrio-themed outfits, while teaser silhouettes hint that Kuromi and other beloved mascots will join the fun. Even the Chaos Emeralds look set to receive a Sanrio makeover, tying both worlds together in playful fashion.
Fans can cast one vote per day through May 25, 2025, by visiting the official Partner Category ballot at https://ranking.sanrio.co.jp/partner/sonicandfriends/ (Japanese Internet connection/VPN required). Midterm results (top three) will be announced on May 13 at 1:00 PM JST, and final rankings will be revealed on June 29 during SANRIO FES 2025.
