Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 officially left theaters earlier this month, and now we have a clearer picture of just how successful it was for the studio. According to Box Office Mojo, Sonic 3 finished its run with a massive $491,946,657 total box office gross. The film shattered several franchise records and even briefly held the title of highest-grossing live-action video game movie of all time, before being overtaken by A Minecraft Movie.

However, success in the modern film landscape is about more than just theatrical revenue. Deadline recently shared a breakdown of the movie’s total profitability across theatrical, streaming, television, and home video sales as part of their annual “Most Valuable Blockbuster” tournament. Their sources estimated a slightly lower total box office figure, but still confirmed the film’s enormous success.

Revenue streams included $225 million from theatrical showings, $150 million from streaming and television rights (including Paramount paying itself for Paramount+ distribution), and $90 million from home video sales, including digital platforms and physical releases. Altogether, these combined to an impressive $465 million in total revenue.

On the expense side, costs reached $341.4 million. That figure included a $122 million production budget, $125 million in advertising, $35 million in distribution and residuals, $24.4 million in interest and overhead, and $35 million for participation payouts to talent and producers.

In the end, Sonic 3 brought Paramount approximately $123 million in profit, placing it as the 10th most profitable film of 2024. With additional revenue expected from further TV licensing deals and ongoing home video sales, that margin will likely continue to grow over time.

This likely marks our final major box office update for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film’s performance was an undeniable success by almost every metric, even if it narrowly missed the $500 million milestone. Maybe Sonic the Hedgehog 4, already slated for a 2027 release, will be the one to speed past it.
