Yesterday, the Sonic side of the internet buzzed with news about the plot synopsis for the upcoming third installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe (ourselves included).

An article in Animation Magazine detailed the story synopses for 30 animated movies slated to release in 2024, and among them was the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3, scheduled for release on December 20th of that year. While most synopses appeared accurate, the Sonic 3 plot sounded too far-fetched to be true.

The synopsis reads:

Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Directed by series regular Jeff Fowler, this third installment in the movie adventures of Sega’s speedy blue hero (voiced by Ben Schwartz) finds the entire Donut family traveling to Egypt where Sonic meets a pink hedgehog who claims to predict the future, while Robotnik returns from hell and awakens a new challenger, Shadow the HedgehogParamount/Blur/Marza/Sega; Dec. 10

Two distinct details stand out in the quote above. Firstly, Robotnik’s return from literal Hell, seemingly after meeting his end at the conclusion of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Later Hater!

Secondly, the article’s error in the release date.

While the overall plot aligns well with Sonic Adventure 2’s story, with Shadow as a significant player, involving Sonic and companions venturing to the desert and infiltrating Eggman’s secret base inside a pyramid to board a space shuttle bound for the Space Colony Ark, it’s the claim of “Robotnik returning from Hell” that feels too out there, even for a movie series known for its extravagant moments. Additionally, it appears the initial quote came from an IMDB plot synopsis (which was even more outlandish) that could have been written by any registered user and has since been deleted.

Original IMDB plot synopsis before it was deleted

This seems to be a condensed version or a copy/paste of a hoax from an IMDB user. With Jim Carrey apparently considering retirement from acting, it’s uncertain if Robotnik will appear in the movie or possibly be replaced by Agent Stone or another character.
