Paramount Pictures is preparing for another thrilling chapter in the beloved Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 slated for a spring 2027 release. This exciting announcement coincides with the highly anticipated debut of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is projected to dominate the box office with an estimated $55–$60 million opening weekend from 3,800 theaters across North America. Internationally, the third film will premiere in 52 markets on Christmas Day, further solidifying its global appeal.

The Sonic franchise has become a key success story for Paramount, with the first two films earning a combined $725.2 million worldwide and generating over $180 million in home entertainment revenue. Early critical praise for Sonic the Hedgehog 3currently boasting an impressive 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes—underscores the series’ enduring popularity. With this momentum, it’s no surprise that Paramount is continuing Sonic’s cinematic adventures.

Jeff Fowler, who directed the first three films, is expected to return for the fourth installment, although official confirmation is still pending. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features the much-anticipated return of Jim Carrey as the iconic Dr. Ivo Robotnik, along with a dual performance as Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s grandfather. Ben Schwartz once again lends his voice to Sonic, joined by James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Keanu Reeves, who makes his debut as Shadow the Hedgehog in the third film.

As with previous entries, Paramount is keeping plot details for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 under wraps. However, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 delving into deeper lore, darker themes, and introducing fan-favorite characters like Shadow, the upcoming sequel is expected to expand even further into the rich Sonic universe.

The Sonic film series has also grown beyond the big screen, with the Knuckles spinoff series debuting on Paramount+ earlier this year. Given the franchise’s ongoing success and growing fan interest, it’s clear that Paramount sees Sonic as a cornerstone of its family-friendly content strategy.

Fans can circle spring 2027 on their calendars as they await the next chapter in Sonic’s cinematic saga.

But shouldn’t it be released around 2026? Since if we follow the connection of the films it only “took a year”… please let it be 2026 or my anxiety will kill me. 🥹
