Android Sonic has escaped Fortnite, and he has brought a couple of familiar-looking robots with him.

SEGA has launched a new Amazon merchandise collection featuring Android Sonic, Android Shadow and Android Knuckles, the mechanical counterparts introduced as part of the ongoing Fortnite x Sonic the Hedgehog collaboration. The designs are accompanied by brand-new artwork from Evan Stanley, with Sonic’s official social accounts unveiling the range on September 3.

The announcement gives each of the three Android characters dedicated Stanley artwork rather than simply recycling their Fortnite renders, taking the variants beyond their original in-game appearances almost immediately after their debut. Stanley, better known to many fans for her extensive work on the Sonic comics, also works with SEGA of America across the franchise’s lore and short-form animation efforts.

While Sonic’s announcement simply describes the release as new merchandise available through Amazon, the range stretches beyond the T-shirts shown most prominently in the promotion. Current listings spotted by the Sonic community also apply the artwork to hoodies, mugs, water bottles and phone cases, giving Sonic, Shadow and Knuckles a fairly broad first merchandise outing in their new robotic forms.

The timing is particularly fitting after Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka recently explained why Android Sonic exists at all. Speaking with IGN, Iizuka said that the genuine Sonic is a character who “will never hold a gun,” creating an obvious problem when trying to integrate him into Fortnite’s weapon-heavy gameplay. SEGA’s solution was to create an artificial version that could follow Fortnite’s rules without changing what Sonic himself is allowed to do.

That workaround ultimately expanded beyond Sonic himself. Fortnite now features Android versions of Sonic, Shadow and Knuckles, giving Epic Games versions of the trio that can use the game’s standard proportions, movement systems and arsenal while remaining distinct from their regular counterparts.

Now SEGA is treating those designs as characters worth merchandising in their own right.

It is also not Stanley’s first recent collaboration with SEGA on Amazon-exclusive Sonic products. Earlier this summer, she created two original illustrations for a separate Sonic 35th anniversary merchandise collection, which similarly appeared across apparel, mugs and other products. The new release instead gives the spotlight entirely to the franchise’s freshly introduced Fortnite variants.

Whether Android Sonic and friends continue appearing outside Fortnite remains to be seen, but getting dedicated Evan Stanley artwork and their own merchandise range this quickly suggests SEGA is already having a little fun with the strange robotic loophole it created to get Sonic onto the Battle Royale island.
