Panini Reveals Sonic the Hedgehog Trading Cards With Kaboom!, Color Blast and 1-of-1 Prizms

Pulling Sonic from a pack of trading cards is about to get considerably more expensive if the collector market has anything to say about it.

Panini America has revealed a new Sonic the Hedgehog trading card collection, bringing characters from across the franchise’s classic and modern eras into the company’s premium collecting format with Kaboom!, Color Blast, numbered Prizms and unique 1-of-1 cards among the biggest pulls.

And yes, there are going to be some extremely rare Sonics hiding in those packs.

Panini’s new collection spans the wider franchise rather than focusing on a single game or animated series. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Dr. Eggman are among the characters specifically highlighted so far, with both classic and modern designs represented throughout the set.

Several dedicated insert families will provide different ways of collecting them.

Negative Space cards strip the presentation back around their featured characters, while Eggman Empire naturally turns the spotlight toward Dr. Eggman and his side of Sonic’s world. Artistry in Motion takes a more stylized approach built around the speed and movement associated with the series.

Then come the cards collectors will probably be staring at pack odds for.

Panini is bringing two of its best-known ultra-rare insert brands to Sonic with Color Blast and Kaboom! cards.

Kaboom! has become one of Panini’s most recognizable chase-card lines across its sports releases, using highly illustrated comic-style artwork and appearing in intentionally limited quantities. Color Blast serves a similarly high-end role, surrounding its subjects with the distinctive explosion of color that gives the insert its name.

Now Sonic and friends are getting the same treatment.

The rarity ladder goes considerably further through the collection’s Prizm parallels. Panini says collectors will be able to chase Tie-Dye Prizms numbered to just five copies, before reaching the top of the pile with Black Prizms limited to exactly one copy each.

So if someone pulls a Black Prizm Sonic, that particular card is not merely difficult to find.

There is literally only one.

For the main Hobby configuration, Panini lists six cards per pack, six packs per box and 12 boxes per case. Additional Hobby Preferred and retail configurations are also planned, meaning the collection will not be restricted entirely to traditional Hobby boxes.

Further details on exactly how the contents and exclusives differ between those formats are still being rolled out.

This is not Sonic’s first encounter with Panini trading cards. The company previously released the Sonic the Hedgehog: Gotta Go Fast! Trading Card Collection internationally in 2024, featuring 243 cards with Rainbow Foil, glow-in-the-dark and Fresnel-effect cards among its special variants.

Sonic City has also previously covered Panini’s Sonic Prime Sticker Collection, which launched in Europe with 200 stickers, special artwork and a collector album. That was a completely separate product centered specifically around Netflix’s animated series.

The new Panini America collection is therefore heading in a very different direction, borrowing the parallel-heavy, scarcity-driven structure normally associated with the company’s premium sports-card products and applying it to Sonic.

That makes the numbered cards particularly interesting. Instead of simply completing a fixed checklist, collectors can potentially chase the same character across increasingly scarce Prizm variations, right down to those one-of-one Black versions.

And with Kaboom! and Color Blast joining the mix, there will apparently be plenty of ways to discover that the Sonic card you want is considerably rarer than you hoped.

Panini has not yet revealed the complete checklist, full odds, pricing or final release date for every configuration. We will be keeping an eye out as the company provides a closer look at the individual cards and remaining product details.
