OpenGGF, the open-source engine rebuilding the original Mega Drive Sonic games around data loaded from legally obtained ROMs, has released one of its biggest updates yet.
Version 0.6.20260911 landed on September 11 with a broad push toward matching the original behaviour of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles more closely. Rather than shipping SEGA’s game assets itself, OpenGGF reads level data, artwork, music and other information from ROMs supplied by the user, then runs its own Java implementation of the games’ systems.
Accuracy is the main obsession here. OpenGGF checks its behaviour against community-maintained disassemblies and recorded hardware traces, with v0.6 making changes across physics, subpixel movement, collision, water, cameras, bosses, Badniks, sidekicks and level events. The aim is not simply to make something that looks roughly like classic Sonic, but to reproduce the rules underneath it closely enough for differences to be measured.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles remains the least complete of the three games, but it has moved considerably beyond OpenGGF’s earlier builds. Angel Island and Hydrocity remain the project’s primary validated route, while work has spread further into stages including Marble Garden, Casino Night, IceCap, Mushroom Hill and Launch Base. The developers are still open about the gaps, with later routes, Knuckles-specific sections and some special-stage material remaining unfinished.
Audio received some of the heaviest work in v0.6. OpenGGF’s implementation of the original SMPS sound system has been reworked around the behaviour of the three games’ own drivers, covering the YM2612 FM synthesizer, PSG and DAC/PCM playback. Music, sound effects, fades, extra-life music restoration and sound-request scheduling are now checked against dedicated comparison tests.
That does not mean the audio work is finished. The developers still list complete SMPS parity and full listening validation among the remaining jobs, but v0.6 gives the project a much stronger base for measuring where its sound differs from original hardware. A faster FM option has also been added, with the project reporting that all 178 of its supported chip-test scripts produce matching results while cutting the amount of work done during playback.
The update also digs into the less glamorous parts that make a preservation-focused engine useful. OpenGGF’s rewind system now captures more of the live game state, including dynamic objects, level events and audio history, while performance work reduces repeated processing during rewind, art decoding and rendering. The development side has grown too, with headless gameplay tests, trace replay, visual and audio regression checks, ROM-analysis tools and early level-editor foundations all helping contributors compare the engine against the originals.
OpenGGF is released under the GPLv3 and is not affiliated with SEGA. No ROMs, sprites, music or other copyrighted Sonic game data are distributed with the project. Players need to provide supported ROM images themselves, with the engine currently targeting specific revisions of Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles ROM.
Getting it running has become a little easier as well. OpenGGF now provides native release packages for Windows, macOS and Linux, with Java bundled into those downloads. Java 21 is still required when building the project from source or using the universal JAR.
For a project concerned with preserving how the original games actually behave rather than simply reproducing how they look, v0.6 is a hefty step forward. There is still plenty left to finish, particularly around Sonic 3 & Knuckles and complete audio parity, but OpenGGF is steadily turning into a surprisingly detailed open implementation of Sonic’s 16-bit foundations.
