Yuki Imada’s Sonic the Hedgehog: The Blade of Courage is officially making the jump to English.
IDW Publishing and Shogakukan have partnered with SEGA to release the first official English-language edition of the CoroCoro manga, bringing Sonic and Yuta’s adventure to international readers through the IDW Publishing App. This is the first officially licensed English translation of the series, giving English-speaking fans a proper way to follow the manga rather than relying on summaries or unofficial translations.
Created by Yuki Imada, The Blade of Courage follows Sonic alongside Yuta, an elementary school student whose otherwise ordinary life changes completely after crossing paths with the Blue Blur. At the center of the story is the mysterious Blade of Courage, which draws the pair into a much larger adventure involving Dr. Eggman.
The English release began with Chapter 1, “Sonic the Hedgehog and Yuta the Slowpoke,” introducing the wonderfully mismatched pairing of the fastest hedgehog around and a boy known as the “slowest kid in the world.”
And if you are wondering whether it is actually worth reading, we have already done the homework.
Sonic City reviewed Chapter 1, finding a surprisingly thoughtful opening built around Sonic and Yuta’s very different approaches to the world. What initially looks like a simple fast-versus-slow comedy quickly becomes a story about courage, kindness and learning that moving at your own pace does not make that pace any less valuable.

Chapter 2, “What You Need,” followed on August 19 and continues developing Sonic and Yuta’s partnership while pushing the larger story forward. Our spoiler-free Chapter 2 review found the manga becoming more confident with that relationship, particularly in the way Sonic begins treating Yuta as a genuine partner rather than somebody he simply needs to protect.

Those reviews also give us a useful way to follow the English release as it happens. IDW says new translated chapters will arrive every three weeks, so readers can follow the manga directly through the app while Sonic City continues looking at each chapter as the story develops.
For now, the official English edition remains exclusive to the IDW Publishing App, available through both Google Play and Apple’s App Store. IDW has not announced a physical English release of The Blade of Courage, so the app is currently the only official English-language home for the manga.
There is another pretty significant announcement tucked into IDW’s release as well.
An official English translation of the Shadow the Hedgehog manga is also coming at a later date. IDW has not provided a release schedule yet, but its confirmation means The Blade of Courage is not a one-off experiment. At least one more Sonic manga that previously remained largely inaccessible to English-speaking audiences is getting the same treatment.
IDW Sonic Editorial said the company was excited to bring Yuki Imada’s work to English readers alongside its existing Sonic comics, specifically highlighting Sonic and Yuta’s adventure against Dr. Eggman.
For a franchise with decades of manga that has often remained locked behind the language barrier, this is a pretty meaningful development. English-speaking fans can finally read The Blade of Courage officially as it unfolds, and if IDW’s upcoming Shadow the Hedgehog translation performs well, hopefully this is only the beginning.
We will certainly be reading along.
