After a week of increasingly less subtle teasers, Fortnite has finally shown its hand.

Epic Games has released the full official trailer for Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, bringing together the huge gaming crossover lineup that has been teased, leaked and occasionally argued over throughout the past several days. For Sonic fans, it also gives us our clearest official look yet at how the Sonic the Hedgehog collaboration actually fits into the new season, with Sonic, Shadow and Dr. Eggman appearing alongside the wider Override cast ahead of its August 20 launch.

The trailer finally puts Sonic’s unusual new Fortnite form into proper game footage after yesterday’s crossover comic explained exactly what we were looking at. Rather than simply stretching Sonic, Shadow and Knuckles into humanoid proportions, the comic revealed that their Fortnite bodies are robotic counterparts originally built by Eggman and reprogrammed by Tails using the trio’s biodata. Sonic City covered the complete comic yesterday, which ends by sending those counterparts toward the Fortnite battlefield. Seeing those designs now appear as part of Epic’s full season promotion makes the intention considerably harder to misunderstand.

The Sonic side of Override is also proving much larger than the first Green Hill teaser suggested. Alongside Sonic and Shadow, the trailer features Dr. Eggman, while Tails continues to be represented separately through the companion and flying elements teased earlier this week. Reports following the trailer also point to Sonic being part of the season’s Battle Pass, with additional Sonic cosmetics expected to arrive throughout the season, although Epic has yet to publish the complete store schedule and pricing for everything involved.

And yes, this means we can finally revisit that image.

Yesterday, Sonic City covered an unfinished Override promotional image that looked suspicious enough to deserve its own miniature investigation. The source claimed it was fake and AI-generated, several characters looked distinctly unfinished, and there were enough strange details to make the whole thing difficult to trust. At the same time, some of the character assets looked far too convincing to dismiss completely, while Sonic’s bizarre mechanical body became even more interesting once the official comic revealed the same basic design.

With Epic now releasing the final Override trailer and promotional material, it is clear that the disputed image was at least built from genuine season material. Sonic, Shadow, Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Pac-Man, Persona 5’s Joker and several of the other gaming characters associated with that artwork are now part of the official rollout. The finished trailer also confirms Override as a much broader celebration of video games rather than a season where Sonic simply happens to make a guest appearance. We now even have a the finished concept image which was posted by the official Fortnite social media account:

Beyond Sonic, the trailer and key art bring together a frankly ridiculous collection of gaming properties. Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Pac-Man, Persona 5, Kingdom Hearts, Tetris and several returning gaming collaborations are represented across the season, with Override also introducing new locations, weapons, Sprites and its wider hacking-themed gameplay systems. Sonic nevertheless appears to be one of the major faces of the season, continuing a rollout that has already included a Green Hill-inspired area, Sonic movement mechanics, the Tails teaser and an entire crossover comic establishing the story behind the characters’ arrival.

There are still details we need Epic and SEGA to spell out, particularly the full cosmetic lineup, availability of Shadow and Knuckles, and exactly how the various Sonic-themed items and companions will be distributed. But the period of wondering whether this was going to be a tiny background collaboration is pretty decisively over.

Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override launches on August 20, 2026.

And after months of rumors, several teasers, one very strange leaked image and an entire comic about making Sonic tall enough to hold a gun, we are finally four days away from actually playing the thing.
