Tails might be getting ready to follow Sonic into Fortnite.
Another teaser for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog collaboration has dropped, and this time the spotlight is firmly on Sonic’s two-tailed best friend.
The short video shows a new item that appears to take inspiration from Tails’ signature flying ability, allowing the player to lift off and hover through the air after jumping.
Basically, why bring a jetpack when you can bring two fox tails?
More interesting, however, is how Epic Games has chosen to present the teaser.
The official Fortnite YouTube upload is titled “That’s one trusty Fortnite sidekick…”, while Sonic’s official social media post accompanying the video asks, “You wanna fly high, Tails?”
That wording has naturally led to speculation that Tails himself could be joining Fortnite as a Sidekick cosmetic.
Nothing in the actual footage shows Tails walking or flying alongside the player, so we would not call that a full reveal just yet. But putting the words “Fortnite sidekick” directly alongside a teaser explicitly referencing Tails feels considerably more deliberate than simply describing his usual relationship with Sonic.
Sidekicks are Fortnite’s companion cosmetics, following players through supported experiences, reacting to their surroundings, and interacting through dedicated Sidekick Emotes. Epic specifically describes them as cosmetic companions with no gameplay advantage.
So if Tails does turn out to be one, he would effectively be able to tag along on players’ adventures without needing to be adapted into a normal playable Outfit.
Which, given the proportions of most Sonic characters compared with Fortnite’s regular humanoid skins, actually makes quite a bit of sense.
The new teaser follows the first Sonic x Fortnite preview, which revealed a Sonic-inspired area resembling Green Hill and kicked off the proper promotional rollout for the crossover.
It also means an old rumor is looking considerably less ridiculous in hindsight. We previously covered claims that Sonic content was being discussed for Fortnite, although even the original source was uncertain whether that particular information would ultimately materialize.
Well. Here we are.
There are still plenty of unanswered questions surrounding the collaboration, including exactly which Sonic characters will appear, what cosmetics will be available, and how the various Sonic-inspired gameplay elements will work.
Fortunately, we should not have long to wait.
Fortnite’s current Battle Pass is scheduled to end on August 20, 2026, matching the date being promoted for the next major season rollout.
And with several days still left before then, there is every chance Epic and SEGA have a few more Sonic teasers waiting in the wings.
Or tails.
