The second volume of Sonic and the Blade of Courage is almost here, and Sonic has a very familiar rival standing in his way.

Shogakukan has revealed the cover for Volume 2 of Yuki Imada’s ongoing Sonic manga, with Sonic and Shadow taking center stage.

Their confrontation is more than just a good excuse for some dramatic cover art. New details from the publisher reveal that the rivalry will play an important role in the story collected inside.

After Sonic and Yuta obtain a Chaos Emerald that could help stop Dr. Eggman’s plan to crystallize humanity, Shadow suddenly enters the picture and takes the Emerald for himself.

Understandably, Sonic is not particularly interested in letting him keep it.

That sets the stage for a new battle between the two hedgehogs, with Shogakukan placing their showdown among the major selling points of the upcoming volume.

And Shadow is not the only returning rival involved.

Metal Sonic is also confirmed to appear, with the publisher teasing more battles involving familiar characters as the story continues.

Sonic and the Blade of Courage Volume 2 will launch in Japan on August 28, 2026, priced at 770 yen including tax.

The B6-format release contains 192 pages and carries the ISBN 9784091543233.

Readers picking up the collected edition will also get some material created specifically for the physical volume, including an additional bonus manga and exclusive illustrations not included as part of the regular serialization.

The series is created by Yuki Imada, with SEGA credited for the original work, and first began serialization in June 2025.

Sonic City previously covered the manga’s debut, which introduced Yuta as Sonic’s new companion and kicked off an original adventure created specifically for the CoroCoro series.

The manga has since progressed into its second story arc, while international readers now have an official way to follow along as well. English-translated chapters are being released digitally through the IDW Publishing app.

With Shadow taking possession of a Chaos Emerald, Metal Sonic entering the action, and Eggman’s latest plan hanging over everything, Volume 2 looks set to raise the stakes considerably from the manga’s opening chapters.

And putting Sonic and Shadow against each other certainly is not a bad way to get everyone’s attention.

Sonic and the Blade of Courage Volume 2 releases in Japan on August 28, 2026.
