SEGA has released Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, giving fans a new way to experience Sonic’s open-zone adventure.
The updated release is available now on Nintendo Switch 2. In Japan, the physical package version of Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition is scheduled to launch on September 17, 2026.
Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition includes the base Sonic Frontiers game, all three major free updates previously released for other platforms, free downloadable content, and Digital Deluxe bonuses from the start. That includes in-game items, the Digital Art Book and Mini Soundtrack, and the expanded content added after the original release, including additional story content and playable Amy, Knuckles, and Tails.
SEGA has optimized the Nintendo Switch 2 version around the new hardware, offering a more visually detailed and smoother experience than the original Nintendo Switch release. Players can also choose between a graphics-focused mode and a frame rate-focused mode, allowing them to prioritize visual quality or smoother performance.
SEGA has also released new artwork to celebrate the launch of Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition. In Japan, this version is known as Sonic Frontiers: Super Deluxe, reflecting its all-in-one package of updates, DLC, and digital bonuses.
The original Sonic Frontiers first launched in 2022 and has sold more than 4.5 million copies worldwide, according to SEGA. The game marked a major shift for the series, sending Sonic across the Starfall Islands in a large open-zone adventure. Players explore mysterious islands, solve puzzles, battle powerful enemies, enter Cyber Space stages, collect Chaos Emeralds, and work to uncover the secrets behind the islands while saving Sonic’s friends.
The Definitive Edition brings that experience together in one package, making it the most complete version of Sonic Frontiers for Nintendo Switch 2 players. The release includes the game’s major post-launch additions, from new modes and costumes to The Final Horizon update, giving new players access to the expanded version of the adventure from the start.
SEGA has also released a launch trailer for Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition, highlighting Sonic’s journey across the Starfall Islands, the improved Nintendo Switch 2 presentation, and the full package now available on the system.
Alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 launch, SEGA has revised the digital pricing for Sonic Frontiers on other platforms in Japan. The standard digital edition has been lowered from 6,589 yen to 4,990 yen, while the Digital Deluxe Edition has been lowered from 7,689 yen to 5,990 yen. The price revision applies only to the digital versions, with timing depending on each platform.
SEGA Store Online has also opened pre-orders for a limited DX Pack tied to the Japanese physical release. The Sonic Frontiers: Super Deluxe SEGA Store Online DX Pack 35th Anniversary Edition includes the physical Nintendo Switch 2 package, a newly illustrated tapestry, an original T-shirt, an original pass case, and an acrylic keychain.
To celebrate the digital launch, SEGA is also holding an official X campaign in Japan from June 24 at 12:00 PM through July 1 at 11:59 AM. Fans can enter by following the official Sonic account and either reposting the campaign post or sharing what they are looking forward to with the hashtag #ソニフロスイッチ2に登場. Prizes include a 35th anniversary paperweight, selectable Pay prizes, and a SONIC PICT acrylic block.
The release arrives as part of Sonic’s 35th anniversary celebrations, adding another major game launch to a packed year of events, collaborations, merchandise, music, and fan activities.
For players who missed Sonic Frontiers the first time around, Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition offers a fresh entry point into one of the series’ most important modern games. For returning fans, the Nintendo Switch 2 version offers a new reason to revisit the Starfall Islands with improved visuals, smoother performance, and the full post-launch package included.
