Sonic the Hedgehog is joining IDW’s spooky season lineup with a new horror-themed variant cover this October.
IDW Publishing has announced IDW Goes Dark, a special variant cover initiative celebrating the publisher’s IDW Dark imprint and its growing horror lineup. As part of the campaign, Sonic the Hedgehog #91 will receive a special variant cover by Yamila Kareh, also known as @hikariviny.

The cover will be released as Sonic the Hedgehog #91 Cover E. While Sonic the Hedgehog is not becoming a horror comic, the variant gives the series a seasonal twist as IDW spreads its darker visual theme across several titles for October.
The IDW Goes Dark lineup also includes horror-themed variants for Godzilla, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, and more. Fangoria revealed the first wave of covers, with Sonic included among the featured titles.
Heather Antos, Senior Group Editor at IDW, said the response to IDW Dark has gone beyond the publisher’s expectations, pointing to original titles such as Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees and The Exorcism at 1600 Penn, along with licensed horror projects including Event Horizon, Smile, and A Quiet Place.
“What better way to celebrate than by spreading that darkness across our entire publishing slate with a month of special October variant covers?” Antos said. “This October the future of IDW is only looking darker…”
For Sonic fans, the main takeaway is that Sonic the Hedgehog #91 will have an additional collectible variant cover in October. The issue itself remains part of IDW’s ongoing Sonic comic series, with the IDW Goes Dark release serving as a special cover treatment rather than a full horror crossover story.
