Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has officially wrapped filming, marking a major production milestone for the next entry in Paramount Pictures and SEGA’s movie series.

Director Jeff Fowler confirmed the news on social media, sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from the set alongside a practical Metal Sonic stand-in. Fowler celebrated the wrap by thanking the cast and crew, writing, “And that’s a wrap on #SonicMovie4 !!! On behalf of this amazing cast/crew, we have filmed the BEST Sonic Movie yet and can’t wait to share 💙🩷”

The new image gives fans their clearest look yet at Metal Sonic following the character’s tease at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The robotic rival is expected to play a major role in the fourth film, alongside Amy Rose, who was also introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s ending sequence.

The wrap announcement comes just a few months after production began in March. At the time, Fowler marked the start of filming with a photo featuring Amy’s hammer, making the new Metal Sonic image a fitting bookend for this stage of production.

While Paramount has not released an official plot synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, the returning focus on Metal Sonic and Amy Rose points to the next film drawing at least some inspiration from Sonic CD, the 1993 game where both characters made their first appearances. In that game, Metal Sonic was created by Dr. Eggman as a robotic rival built to challenge Sonic’s speed.

The film will now move further into post-production, where the live-action footage will be combined with the CG work needed to bring Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Amy, Metal Sonic, and the rest of the cast to life.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is currently scheduled to release in theaters on March 19, 2027. Fowler returns to direct after helming the previous three films, with Ben Schwartz returning as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Keanu Reeves as Shadow, and Kristen Bell joining the cast as Amy Rose. Jim Carrey is also expected to return as Dr. Robotnik.

The Sonic movie franchise has become one of the most successful video game film series to date, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 surpassing $490 million worldwide and the full film franchise crossing $1 billion at the global box office.

With filming now complete and Metal Sonic taking the spotlight in Fowler’s wrap photo, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is officially one step closer to racing into theaters next year.
