Paramount has big plans for Sonic the Hedgehog, and it looks like the franchise is speeding toward even more movies. With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 performing well and a fourth film already scheduled for 2027, the studio is reportedly looking into spinoff features to expand the universe even further. This move aligns with the current Hollywood trend, where video game adaptations are breaking box office records—and Sonic is at the forefront.

As reported by The Wrap, Paramount is now eyeing standalone features that delve into stories beyond Sonic’s central narrative. It makes perfect sense considering how characters like Knuckles and Shadow have captured audience attention. The Knuckles TV series premiered last year on Paramount+, and with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introducing Shadow in a major way, he’s a strong candidate for a future solo film. The same goes for Tails, Amy, or even Eggman—especially with Jim Carrey’s continued enthusiasm for the role.

The current boom in video game adaptations isn’t limited to Sonic. The Minecraft Movie recently crossed $720 million worldwide in just a few weeks, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought in $1.3 billion globally in 2023. What’s changed is how these movies are being made—with genuine care and attention to what fans love most. For Sonic, that means high-speed action, friendship, humor, and characters that feel authentic to their game origins.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 recently broke Jim Carrey’s career box office record, surpassing Bruce Almighty’s $484 million total. You can read more about that milestone in our earlier report here.

While Paramount hasn’t officially confirmed which characters could lead future spinoffs, the options are wide open. Whether it’s exploring Shadow’s backstory, giving Rouge the Bat a solo heist movie, or diving into Team Chaotix’s investigations, the Sonic cinematic universe has more than enough depth to support multiple projects.

Hope any spin off is better than the Knuckles TV series, which really wasn’t about Knuckles at all.

As a kid in the 90s I never thought I’d live to see the day when we would have just one Sonic theatrical release but a whole cinematic universe… fuck yeah!
